Ee-8. FALSE Catholic Teachings About MARY!

This study in God’s word is to COMPARE what the Roman Catholic Church teaches about the Virgin Mary as opposed to what the Bible ITSELF teaches about the Virgin Mary. Also, the study is a continuation of the study Ee-2. Is CATHOLICISM BIBLICAL CHRISTIANITY? And in that study, we compare 8 major Roman Catholic ESSENTIAL church doctrines alongside what the Bible ITSELF teaches.

It does not matter which study you read first, but I would suggest reading them both along with all the other more in-depth Bible studies that I have listed under the heading >>>Ee-0. What Every CATHOLIC MUST KNOW!<<< But for now, let us continue with this study in God’s word, the Holy Bible. I will use the authorized version of the Bible called the New Living Translation.

Simply type the verse you desire to compare and click find. All the emphases in the verses that I quote are mine and my comments will be in parenthesis.

I will, however, continue to number the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church with number 9 seeing that this is a continuation of the first 8 Catholic dogmas that we covered in the study “Is Catholicism Biblical Christianity?” So let us get right to this study.

#9. What the Roman Catholic Church teaches.

The Roman Catholic Church teaches that the Virgin Mary REMAINED a VIRGIN her whole life and that Mary did NOT have any other children but Jesus. The Roman Catholic Church tries to explain away the verses in the Bible as those children being cousins of Jesus and not his brothers and sisters that came from the womb of Mary. Here is a quote from the Catholic Catechism page 126 # 500.

"The Church has always understood these passages as not referring to other children of the Virgin Mary. In fact, James and Joseph, 'brothers of Jesus,' are the sons of another Mary, a disciple of Christ...".

#9. What the Bible ITSELF teaches.

However, the Bible itself teaches us that Mary did INDEED have other children.

Please read Matthew 13:54-58.

“He returned to Nazareth, his hometown. (Jesus was born in Bethlehem but he was raised in the city of Nazareth. And as you will see, everyone knew his FAMILY) When he taught there in the synagogue, everyone was amazed and said, “Where does he get this wisdom and the power to do miracles?”

55. Then they scoffed, “He’s just the carpenter’s son, (They knew that Joseph was a carpenter. But they did not know that Jesus was conceived in Mary womb by the Holy Spirit and that Joseph Married her to protect her from being an adulteress) and we know Mary, his mother, (They knew that Mary was the mother of Jesus) and his brothers—James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas. (And they knew the names of all the brothers of Jesus)

56. All his sisters live right here among us. (They also knew the sisters of Jesus who grew up with Jesus in their hometown, the city of Nazareth) Where did he learn all these things?”

57. And they were deeply offended and refused to believe in him. Then Jesus told them, “A prophet is honored everywhere except in his own hometown and among his OWN FAMILY.”

58. And so he did only a few miracles there because of their unbelief.”

Here is the same account in the gospel of Mark from the Douay Rheims Catholic Bible.

Mark 6:3,4.

“Is not this the carpenter, the SON of Mary, the BROTHER of James, and Joseph, and Jude, and Simon? are not ALSO his SISTERS here with us? And they were scandalized in regard to him.

4. And Jesus said to them: A prophet is not without honor, but in his own country, and in his OWN HOUSE, and among his OWN KINDRED.”

There is absolutely NO DOUBT that these verses are speaking of Jesus’ OWN brothers and sisters as being the sons and daughters of the Virgin Mary who did not REMAIN a virgin after Jesus was born.

Some Catholic apologists try to argue that the word “brothers” simply means the DISCIPLES of Jesus. But they are LYING to Catholics.

Please read John 2:12.

“After this he went down to Capernaum, he, and his mother, and his BROTHERS, AND his disciples: and they continued there not many days. ”

Plain and simple, the Roman Catholic Church is WRONG. They do NOT teach what the Bible ITSELF teaches.

Please read where AFTER Jesus was BORN Joseph and Mary came together as man and wife to have MORE children.

Matthew 1:20-25 from the Douay Rheims Catholic Bible.

“But while he thought on these things, behold the Angel of the Lord appeared to him in his sleep, saying: Joseph, son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her, is of the Holy Ghost.

21. And she shall bring forth a son: and thou shalt call his name Jesus. For he shall save his people from their sins.

22. Now all this was done that it might be fulfilled which the Lord spoke by the prophet, saying:

23. Behold a virgin shall be with child, and bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

24. And Joseph rising up from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him, and took unto him his wife.

25. And he KNEW her not TILL she brought forth her FIRST born son: and he called his name Jesus.”

The Greek word translated as “KNEW” means to absolutely know. In other words, the CONTEXT teaches us that Joseph does not come to INTIMATELY know his wife Mary until AFTER their FIRST born child was born. Now some may TRY and argue that this Greek word simply means to have KNOWLEDGE and therefore Joseph knowing Mary has nothing to do with Joseph having SEX with his wife Mary. Here is what the authorized Catholic version of the New Living Translation says.

Matthew 1:25.

“But he did not have SEXUAL RELATIONS with her UNTIL her son was born. And Joseph named him Jesus.”

Again, some may still yet TRY to argue that this is an incorrect translation of this Greek word to mean having SEX even though this is an authorized Catholic translation of the Bible. And to those Catholics who would try and argue that Joseph never had sex with the Blessed Virgin Mary, I would say that they are trusting only in the teaching of the Roman Catholic Church and care nothing about what the word of TRUTH teaches us.

You see my dear brothers and sisters in our Lord Jesus Christ in the Roman Catholic Church, this SAME Greek word is used in Luke 1:36 where Mary asks the angel Gabriel HOW will she have a Son seeing that she has not KNOWN a man.

Luke 1:36 from the Douay Rheims Catholic Bible.

“And Mary said to the angel: How shall this be done because I KNOW (The Greek word “ginosko” Strong’s # 1097 which is the SAME Greek word used in Matthew 1:21 where Joseph did not KNOW his wife Mary UNTIL AFTER their FIRST born child was born. Mary was a VIRGIN because she KNEW) NOT man?”

Now, even IF Mary did not have any more children she did NOT REMAIN a VIRGIN according to what the Bible itself teaches. This verse clearly teaches us that Joseph waited to have sex with his WIFE until AFTER their FIRST BORN child was BORN.

But as we have already seen from the Scriptures Mary did indeed have many MORE children.

Now, Roman Catholic apologists try to explain away these verses by CLAIMING that the brothers and sisters of Jesus were simply his brothers and sisters in the FAITH and thus they are not proven to be born from Mary’s womb.

Let us see what Jesus HIMSELF says when his MOTHER Mary and his BROTHERS came to talk with him while he was teaching in the synagogue.

Please read Matthew 12:46-50 from the AUTHORIZED Roman Catholic New Living Translation.

“As Jesus was speaking to the crowd, his MOTHER and BROTHERS stood outside, asking to speak to him.

47. Someone told Jesus, “YOUR MOTHER and YOUR BROTHERS are standing outside, and they want to speak to you.” (In other words, they INTERRUPTED the teaching of Jesus that he was giving to his SPIRITUAL brothers and sisters by someone telling him that his MOTHER and his BROTHERS were outside asking to speak to him)

48. Jesus asked, “Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?” (In other words, WHO is more important my Mother and my brothers or my real SPIRITUAL MOTHER and BROTHERS?)

49. Then he pointed to his disciples and said, “Look, THESE are MY MOTHER and brothers.

50. Anyone who does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and MOTHER!”

Now, did Jesus have a REAL LITERAL MOTHER? Yes! Jesus did indeed have a REAL Mother whose name was Mary! And she was outside with her other SONS, the BROTHERS of Jesus, asking if they could talk with Jesus. And Jesus answered this INTERRUPTION in his teaching to make a COMPARISON between our own BIOLOGICAL family and our SPIRITUAL family. The Bible clearly teaches us that Jesus has a LITERAL MOTHER and real BROTHERS and SISTERS that were born from the womb of Mary, the MOTHER of Jesus.

Jesus said that some of us would have to leave our biological families for the sake of the gospel but we would be rewarded with a new spiritual family now in this present world. And then in the world to come we will receive eternal life.

Please read Mark 10:29,30.

“Yes, Jesus replied, and I assure you that everyone who has given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or property, for my sake and for the Good News,

30. Will receive now in return a hundred times as many houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and property—along with persecution. And in the world to come that person will have eternal life.”

The TRUTH of what the Bible ITSELF teaches is that the Virgin Mary did NOT REMAIN a virgin AFTER her FIRST born Son was born. Jesus had BOTH literal BROTHERS and SISTERS as well as SPIRITUAL brothers and sisters in the faith.

Please read John 2:12 again.

“After the wedding he went to Capernaum for a few days with his MOTHER, his BROTHERS, AND his disciples.”

Remember that Catholic apologists TRY to explain away the verses in the Bible that the BROTHERS of Jesus were his spiritual BRETHREN in the faith. But when Jesus was comparing the importance of our true spiritual family in Matthew 12:48-50 Jesus pointed to his DISCIPLES as being his MOTHER and BROTHERS. But in John 2:12 it says that Jesus went with his mother, his brothers AND his DISCIPLES. Therefore, it is NOT sound Biblical teaching to say that the BROTHERS of Jesus were his DISCIPLES as Catholic apologists CLAIM.

Matthew 12:48-50.

“Jesus asked, “Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?” (In other words, WHO is more important my Mother and my brothers or my real SPIRITUAL MOTHER and BROTHERS?)

49. Then he pointed to his disciples and said, “Look, THESE are MY MOTHER and brothers.

50. Anyone who does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and MOTHER!”

Now take a close look at John 7:5 from the Douay Rheims Catholic Bible where we are told that even the brothers of Jesus did NOT believe Jesus. But the BRETHREN are the BELIEVERS IN HIM.

John 7:5.

“For neither did his brethren (Or his BROTHERS) believe in HIM.”

Let us read the context from the authorized Catholic version of the New Living Translation.

John 2:1-5.

“After this, Jesus traveled around Galilee. He wanted to stay out of Judea, where the Jewish leaders were plotting his death.

2. But soon it was time for the Jewish Festival of Shelters,

3. And Jesus’ BROTHERS said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, where YOUR FOLLOWERS can see your miracles!

4. You can’t become famous if you hide like this! IF you can do such wonderful things, show yourself to the world!”

5. For EVEN his BROTHERS didn’t believe IN HIM.”

Now you can NOT be one of the BRETHREN of Jesus if you do NOT BELIEVE IN HIM. So it is impossible for these BROTHERS of Jesus to be his BRETHREN, as in BELIEVERS IN HIM because the Bible ITSELF clearly states that they did NOT BELIEVE IN Jesus as the Messiah. They doubted the wonderful things Jesus did. This was even prophesied in Psalm 69:8. We know this is a prophecy of Jesus because Jesus was given vinegar to drink when he was dying of the cross and this is also prophesied in this same Psalm in verse 21.

So please read Psalm 69:8 and 21.

“8. I have become a stranger unto my brethren, and an alien unto my mother's children...

... 21. They also gave me gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.”

Also, keep in mind that the brothers of Jesus not believing in him were BEFORE the death and resurrection of Jesus. We know that Mary and his brothers became true believers that he is the Messiah after God raised Jesus from the dead.

Please read Acts 1:12-14.

“Then the Apostles returned to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, a distance of half a mile.

13. When they arrived, they went to the upstairs room of the house where they were staying. Here are the names of those who were present: Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James (son of Alphaeus), Simon (the Zealot), and Judas (son of James).

14. They all met together and were constantly united in prayer, ALONG WITH Mary, the MOTHER of Jesus, several other women, AND the BROTHERS of Jesus”.

Why say several other WOMEN as opposed to saying, several other SISTERS, if so be that the BROTHERS of Jesus were his BRETHREN in the faith and NOT his literal BROTHERS?

But yet Catholic apologists will go to great lengths to try and SAVE the Roman Catholic doctrine that the Virgin Mary REMAINED a VIRGIN her whole life. And WHY would they do this? Because if their adoration and exaltation of the Blessed Virgin Mary by the Roman Catholic Church are shown to be a FALSE teaching then the whole Roman Catholic Church is called into question as being INFALLIBLE in their teachings.

Please consider some more sound Biblical evidence that the BROTHERS of Jesus were not his spiritual brethren. Rather they were his literal BROTHERS, the sons of his mother Mary.

1 Corinthians 5:9.

“Don’t we have the right to bring a believing wife with us as the other apostles AND the Lord’s BROTHERS do, AND as Peter does.”

Why not just say, “Don’t we have the right to bring a believing wife with us the same as the other Lord’s BRETHREN do.” if so be the Lord’s BROTHERS were his brethren in the faith? There are four categories being spoken of in this verse. Paul the Apostle to the Gentiles is category #1. The OTHER Apostles are in category #2. The Lord’s BROTHERS are in category #3. And Peter is in category #4. The issue at hand here is that it SEEMS that some of the brethren had special benefits to take their wives along with them when they went on missionary trips.

Peter was singled out with the Lord’s BROTHERS as having this privilege and Paul was simply asking why the rest of the brethren were not allowed to bring their wives along? My point is this. Why not just say, “Don’t we have the right to bring a believing wife with us the same as the other Lord’s BRETHREN do?” if so be the Lord’s BROTHERS were just merely Jesus’ brethren in the faith and NOT his literal BROTHERS born from the womb of his mother Mary?

Some Catholic apologists have realized that trying to make the BROTHERS of Jesus to just be the BRETHREN of Jesus in the faith only made things worse so some of them changed their argument to claim that the brothers of Jesus were his COUSINS.

Sorry, but to me, that argument does not work either because the Greek language has another word that is translated as COUSIN in the Bible.

Please read Colossians 4:10.

“Aristarchus, who is in prison with me, sends you his greetings, and so does Mark, Barnabas’s COUSIN. (The Greek word “anepsios” Strong’s #431 which means a relative, sisters’ son and COUSIN. But the Greek word translated as “BROTHER” is “adelphos” Strong’s #80) As you were instructed before, make Mark welcome if he comes your way.”

So then, the sound Biblical evidence teaches us that the Virgin Mary did NOT remain a virgin her whole life as the Roman Catholic Church falsely teaches.

#10. What the Roman Catholic Church teaches.

The Roman Catholic Church teaches that the Virgin Mary was miraculously conceived by God to be born without the stain of original sin. This doctrine is called the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary.

The Catechism of the Roman Catholic Church states the following regarding the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of Mary.

“490. To become the mother of the Savior, Mary "was enriched by God with gifts appropriate to such a role." The angel Gabriel at the moment of the annunciation salutes her as "full of grace." In fact, in order for Mary to be able to give the free assent of her faith to the announcement of her vocation, it was necessary that she be wholly borne by God's grace.

491. Through the centuries the Church has become ever more aware that Mary, "full of grace" through God, was redeemed from the moment of her conception. That is what the dogma of the Immaculate Conception confesses, as Pope Pius IX proclaimed in 1844:

"The most Blessed Virgin Mary was, from the first moment of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege of almighty God and by virtue of the merits of Jesus Christ, Savior of the human race, preserved immune from all stain of original sin." (Pius IX, Ineffabilis Deus, 1854.)”

#10. What the Bible ITSELF teaches.

First of all, the Bible itself does NOT teach the doctrine of original sin. Please read the study F-14. The FALSE DOCTRINE of ORIGINAL SIN! Also, the Roman Catholic Church openly admits that there is NO Scriptural support for this doctrine anywhere in the Bible. Here is a quote from a Catholic book called A Handbook of the Catholic Faith. The emphasis is mine.

“This point of doctrine [the immaculate conception] is not expressly dealt with anywhere in the Bible, nor was it preached by the Apostles, and for many centuries it was not mentioned at all by the Church. Gradually, however, as the idea of the future dogma began to develop among the faithful, theologians submitted the point to the closest examination, and finally, the view then generally prevailing was formally pronounced as a dogma of the Church by His Holiness Pope Pius IX in 1854” (p. 238).”

So then, this now highly revered adoration of Mary was a GRADUAL development of the Roman Catholic Church. So in truth, this Roman Catholic doctrine of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary was INVENTED without any basis in Scripture. Adding just a little leaven at a time. Please notice the YEAR that these NEW Roman Catholic teachings were ADDED to the Roman Catholic Church.

But the Bible itself teaches us that we are to contend for the faith that was once delivered to us. That means that we must base our faith in what we believe on what is written in the New Testament of the Bible under the New Covenant.

Jude 1:3.

“Dear friends, I had been eagerly planning to write to you about the salvation we all share. But now I find that I must write about something else, urging you to DEFEND the FAITH that God has entrusted ONCE for all time to His holy people.”

God warns us to not ADD to his word or to take away from his word. God gave us his word for INSTRUCTION in DOCTRINE just ONCE and for all time. So to ADD TRADITION to church doctrine is ADDING to God’s word.

Please read 2 Timothy 3:12-17.

“But evil people and impostors will flourish. They will deceive others and will THEMSELVES be deceived.

14. But you must remain faithful to the things you have been taught. (Speaking of the true gospel of Jesus Christ taught under the New Covenant written in the NEW TESTAMENT of the Holy Bible) You know they are true, for you know you can trust those who taught you. (Speaking of the Apostles of Jesus Christ who wrote what they taught down in the NEW TESTAMENT of the Bible. The reason Christians should stay in the New Testament for church DOCTRINE is that the New Testament is the NEW COVENANT that God promised in the Old Testament)

15. You have been TAUGHT the Holy Scriptures from childhood, and they (Speaking of ONLY the Holy Scriptures which PROPHESIED of God’s NEW COVENANT) have given you the wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in Christ Jesus. (Nowhere in the entire Bible are we taught to trust in the Virgin Mary for ANYTHING)

16. All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is TRUE and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It (Speaking of the SCRIPTURES ALONE and NOT church tradition) CORRECTS us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.

17. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.”

Let us review WHY the Roman Catholic Church doctrine of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary is WRONG and why we must CORRECT what we believe to agree only with what the Bible ITSELF teaches us.

#1. The doctrine of the “Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary” is not taught anywhere in the entire Bible. And, therefore, Catholics need to CORRECT what they believe and teach to agree completely with what Jesus teaches us in the New Testament.

#2. The doctrine of the “Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary” was not taught or even hinted at by the Apostles of Jesus Christ. And, therefore we must DEFEND the true faith that was taught to us by Jesus and his Apostles ONCE and for all time. We must never ADD church tradition to our faith, especially when church tradition is made mandatory to be believed and obeyed.

#3. The doctrine of the “Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary” evolved over many centuries and was not made an official Roman Catholic Dogma until 1854 by Pope Pious IX.

#4. And thus, the doctrine of the “Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary” was church TRADITION was ADDED to church doctrine by the Roman Catholic Church without any authority from the SCRIPTURES.

Here again is a quote from a Catholic book called A Handbook of the Catholic Faith. The emphasis is mine.

And again, GRADUALLY means that the church TRADITION of the Roman Catholic was ADDED as their church doctrine without any authority from the SCRIPTURES.

The early church during the first century steadfastly DEVOTED themselves to the doctrine of the Apostles of Jesus Christ.

Please read Acts 2:42.

“All the believers devoted themselves to the Apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer.”

The Apostle Paul warns us to take heed HOW we build upon the one foundation of Jesus Christ. Paul did not say the one foundation of Jesus Christ AND the Virgin Mary.

Please read 1 Corinthians 3:10,11.

“Because of God’s grace to me, I have laid the foundation like an expert builder. Now others are building on it. But whoever is building on this foundation must be very careful.

11. For no one can lay any foundation other than the ONE we already have—Jesus Christ.”

The early church Christians did not simply accept whatever they were being taught by the Apostles of Jesus. Rather, they searched the Scriptures for THEMSELVES in order to see IF what the Apostles were teaching them was IN the SCRIPTURES. And if they found what they were being taught to be in the Scriptures then they trusted the teaching to be the TRUTH.

Please read Acts 17:11.

“And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul’s message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to SEE IF Paul and Silas were teaching theTRUTH.”

And when they were convinced from the Scriptures that what they were being taught was indeed SOUND Biblical teaching then they believed. But the Roman Catholic Church WRONGLY teaches that church TRADITION is EQUAL to the very word of Almighty God HIMSELF. Here is a quote from another website citing what the Vatican Council says. The emphasis is mine.

“It is an article of faith from a decree of the Vatican Council that Tradition is a source of theological teaching distinct from Scripture, and that it is infallible. It is therefore to be received with the same internal assent as Scripture for it is the word of God. Whereas much of the teaching of Scripture could not be determined without Tradition, Tradition would suffice without Scripture; it is the safeguard of Scripture”

It would be IMPOSSIBLE to KNOW which tradition is sound Biblical teaching WITHOUT the Scriptures. You see my dear Catholic readers, there were many Christians OPPOSING the teachings of what has now been labeled as the Roman Catholic Church from the time of the second century to this very day who have their OWN church “tradition” based SOLELY on the SCRIPTURES. So WHOSE church tradition is the only sound BIBLICAL TRUTH? Your very eternal life could very well depend on which teaching you believe.

I myself LEFT the Roman Catholic Church to believe only what the Bible ITSELF teaches us that is required to receive eternal life in the world to come. And it is my prayer for all my readers to do the same and believe only what the Bible itself teaches. Always be faithful to share the TRUTH of the WHOLE gospel of Jesus Christ.
