X-7. What does Matthew 24:34 TRULY MEAN?

SPELLING EDITED

X-7. WHAT DOES MATTHEW 24:34 TRULY MEAN?

The purpose of this study is to learn the TRUTH. What is the TRUE meaning of Matthew 24:34? Let us read this verse first out of its context.

Matthew 24:34.

“Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things are fulfilled.”

What is the TRUE meaning of “THIS generation”?

#1. Did Jesus intend his words to mean the generation of his disciples to whom he was speaking in private at the time of the Olivet Discourse?

#2. Did Jesus intend his words to mean the generation at the end of this PRESENT world?

#3. Did Jesus intend his words to mean the generation at the end of the world YET to come?

#4. Did Jesus intend his words to mean the word “generation” to have been translated as this NATION of Israel?

#5. Did Jesus intend his words to mean the word “generation” to have been translated as THIS AGE?

Let us take a look at how E-Sword defines the Greek word “genea”.

G1074

γενεά

genea

ghen-eh-ah'

From (a presumed derivative of) G1085; a generation; by implication an age (the period or the persons): - age, generation, nation, time.

Total KJV occurrences: 42

Just as a side note for those who are interested in numbers in the Bible and their meanings, the number 42 is the number for the second coming of Jesus. And the Greek word “translated” and generation in Matthew 24:34 is found 42 times in the New Testament. It is translated 37 times a “generation”, 2 times as “time”, 2 times as “age”, and 1 time as “nation”.

Before we continue this study in God’s word for those of you who are TRULY seeking to know the TRUE meaning of Matthew 24:34 when it is correctly interpreted in the LIGHT of the WHOLE word of Almighty God, I want to be upfront with you. In other words, I want you to know upfront that I am a POST-tribulation pre-LITERAL-Millennium and VISIBLE second coming of Jesus believer. In other words, I do NOT believe that Jesus has ALREADY returned at any time in history in any shape or form whether visible or invisible.

Now, if you disagree and you yourself sincerely believe that Jesus has indeed already returned at some point in history past then I implore you to read this study all the way through because the very CONTEXT of Matthew chapter 24 proves that you are wrong in your interpretation of Matthew 24:34 to mean the first-century church generation would not pass away until Jesus returned. Some Christians believe that Jesus returned in 70 AD at the destruction of Jerusalem, as in, the SECOND coming of Jesus occurred in 70 AD. Other Christians believe that Jesus returned in 1948. And thus, to them, there is not a future great tribulation. The Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that Jesus returned invisibly because of many failed prophecies of date setting not coming to pass starting in 1799, then 1914 all the way to 1975 as their last predicted date of the second coming of Jesus. And then there are Christians who believe that Jesus has already returned in the form of the “Holy Spirit” on the day of Pentecost. But this study will be focusing on the “alleged” return of Jesus in 70 AD. Keep in mind that the 70 AD return of Jesus believers do not all completely agree with each other. In other words, some of them still believe in a VISIBLE second coming of Jesus at the END on a NON-LITERAL 1000 year reign of Jesus. But almost all  of these groups of Christians believe that Matthew 24:34 meaning the FIRST-century generation as the only possible meaning for “THIS generation”

So I am going to cover Matthew chapter 24 verse by verse and point out some things that 70 AD believers need to KNOW lest they continue to be deceived. The SIMPLE truth is that Jesus did NOT say that the “THIS” generation would literally see all these things with there own eyes. This verse simply says that all these things would come to pass before “THIS” generation ended. Therefore, EVEY generation AFTER 70 AD can fit the “THIS” generation of the ONE SIGN of the destruction of the Temple and the city of Jerusalem. Let us read the FIVE different possible interpretations of Matthew 24:34, THIS generation before I point out many things that Christians simply read right over in Matthew chapter 24.

Now let us begin the verse by verse study of Matthew chapter 24, all 52 verses.

Jesus Foretells the Destruction of the Temple

“Matthew 24:1.  And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him for to show him the buildings of the temple.

Matthew 24:2.  And Jesus said unto them, See you not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.”

The disciples of Jesus are “proud” of their Temple showing its beauty and massive stone construction that one would think would last forever. But Jesus responds to their “exalting” of the man-made Temple by saying that it will be DESTROYED. And this response by Jesus caused the disciples to ask Jesus THREE distinct and DIFFERENT questions.

Signs of the End of the Age

“Matthew 24:3.  And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him PRIVATELY, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? And what shall be the sign of your coming, and of the end of the world?”

Please notice that Jesus is speaking PRIVATELY to his disciples only during the entire chapter 24 of Matthew. Then notice that the disciples ask Jesus three distinct and specific questions.

#1. WHEN will the destruction of the Temple take place?

#2. WHAT will be the SIGN of your COMING?

#3. And when is the END of the world? Or when is the END of THIS AGE

So, obviously, the disciples themselves ASSUMED that the destruction of the temple would be the END of the world. Or at least the end of THIS PRESENT AGE. Now before Jesus begins to answer these three separate questions he WARNS them to NOT be DECEIVED. And that WARNING to not be deceived my dear brothers and sisters in our Lord Jesus Christ has not been heeded by some Christians.

“Matthew 24:4.  And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.”

QUESTION #1.

What if you are wrong and YOU are DECEIVING others by teaching that Jesus has already returned based upon your own personal INTERPRETATION of the two words TRANSLATED as “THIS GENERATION”?

We already looked at the different meanings of the Greek word translated as “generation”. So now, let us look at some other meanings of the Greek word translated as “THIS”. Here is how E-Sword defines this Greek word.

G3778

οὗτος, οὗτοι, αὕτη, αὕται

houtos    houtoi hautē    hautai

hoo'-tos, hoo'-toy, how'-tay, how'-tahee

Including the nominative masculine plural (second form), nominative feminine singular (third form), and the nominate feminine plural, (fourth form). From the article G3588 and G846; he (she or it), that is, this or that (often with the article repeated): - he (it was that), hereof, it, she, such as, the same, these, they, this (man, same, woman), which, who.

Here are the possible combinations.

#1. Obviously, we already know one possible translation to be “this” generation.

#2. However, Jesus could have INTENDED his words to mean “THAT” generation or any of the following combinations of meanings of both Greek words.

This AGE, speaking of the end of this present world.

THAT age, speaking of the end of the world yet to come. Or Jesus could have intended his words to mean the NATION of Israel will NOT be wiped out by my enemy Satan, but rather, Israel will remain unto the END of the world at the end of the literal Millennial reign of Jesus which will indeed pass away but my words with NOT pass away. I want you to keep this meaning in mind when we get to verse 7 where Jesus says the kingdom will rise against kingdom.

Now, to me, those who teach that Jesus has ALREADY returned in 70 AD have obviously read right over this verse WARNING us to NOT be deceived. And here is just one reason why I say this. THINK of just how MANY things that Jesus is saying that must take place before the END of “THIS AGE”. Next verse.

“Matthew 24:5.  For MANY shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive MANY.”

QUESTION #2.

So how many false teachers came in the name of Jesus CLAIMING that THEY were the Christ between 30 AD and 70 AD that DECEIVED MANY?

Jesus said that there would be MANY claiming to be the Christ BEFORE all these things are fulfilled. Now, there have indeed been many claiming to be Christ in the past nearly 2,000 years, particularly, in the last 50 years and “this age” is not yet over. But, I do not find any claiming to be the Christ between 30 AD and 70 AD. There might have been a few but certainly, not MANY claiming to be the Messiah during that short 40-year span of time. Next verse.

“Matthew 24:6.  And you shall hear of wars and rumors of wars: see that you are not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the END is NOT YET.”

QUESTION #3.

How many wars and rumors of wars were there between 30 AD and 70 AD?

Now, in the last nearly 2,000 years, there have been many wars. And the first world war was set on the extermination of the Jewish race which fits meaning “#4” that THIS NATION will not pass until all these things are fulfilled. And during the great tribulation, there will be another war seeking to wipe out the Jewish NATION which Jesus will personally end at the battle called the Battle of Armageddon. And again, at the end of the literal 1000 year reign of Jesus Satan will deceive the nations to make war against the people of God. And at the END of that final war which will be at the end of the literal 1000 year reign of Jesus, this present world as we know it will pass away and melt with fervent heat. Then Almighty God will create a new heaven and a new earth wherein His new creation of righteous immortal sons and daughters will dwell for all eternity. In other words, it is “PREACHED” and UNDERSTOOD that there will be one final war at the END of the world yet to come. To say this another way, the King James Version translators chose a poor word, “rumor”, to convey the true meaning of this verse. I believe this phrase should be understood as “you shall HEAR of wars that may seem like the end but understand that you do not need to fear them because you understand that two more wars must be fought, one war at the end of THIS AGE, and the final war at the END of THAT AGE, the end of the world yet to come. And then the END of the worlds will come and the new age of eternity will come.”

Also, I do not see many wars fought between 30 AD and 70 AD. Again, the Greek word translated as “rumors” means something heard, something PREACHED, and something UNDERSTOOD. And, according to the Bible ITSELF, there will be a WAR right before the literal 1000 year reign of Jesus and one final war after the 1000 year reign of Jesus has ended.

QUESTION #4.

How many wars have been fought AFTER 70 AD?

According to the WHOLE word of Almighty God, DURING the LITERAL 1000 year reign of Jesus there will be NO WARS. So, clearly, according to what the Bible itself TRULY teaches us about the second coming of Jesus and his kingdom, it is IMPOSSIBLE for Jesus to have ALREADY returned at any time in history because WARS are still yet being fought in THIS AGE or in this present world.

Please read Isaiah 2:1-4.

“And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD'S house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it.

3.  And many people shall go and say, Come you, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.

4.  And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall NOT lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.”

Jesus will rule with a rod of iron to ensure that his kingdom will be a kingdom of PEACE. This one verse alone proves beyond any shadow of a doubt that Jesus has NOT YET returned because there are still WARS being fought in THIS AGE. Let us move on to the next verse.

“Matthew 24:7.  For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.”

QUESTION #5.

How many famines, pestilences, earthquakes in different places were there between 30 AD and 70 AD?

In the past nearly 2000 years there have been many famines, many pandemic plagues, and many earthquakes even in places where there were never earthquakes before. Plus, the earthquakes have drastically increased in number and in intensity.

Also, the Greek word translated as a nation also means a race of people, as in ethnic groups will fight against other ethnic groups. And in the past nearly 2,000 years there have been many racial wars fought in the streets of nearly every major city in the world called gang wars. Again, World War I was about the genocide of the race of Jews. And the Battle of Armageddon will ALSO be about wiping the Jews off the face of the earth, according to Psalm 83. So to me, the meaning of THIS NATION of Israel will not pass away, could very well have been in the mind of Jesus when he spoke the words in Matthew 24:34 that are translated as THIS GENERATION. Think about KINGDOM against KINGDOM to mean Satan's kingdom against God's kingdom. Most wars, most fights, and even most arguments have, the Satan side, STARTING the war, fight, and even argument against the other side that was at peace which is simply DEFENDING themselves. To ME, it is CLEAR that the abomination of desolation that we, the church, are to be watching for is Israel being surrounded by ARMIES. And, for ME PERSONALLY, I believe that this ARMY will be a radical ISLAMIC army of the TEN united Muslim nations that will be filled with HATRED toward Israel, which to ME, the Bible clearly prophesies will make a league together to wipe Israel off the face of the earth.

Please read Psalm 83.

“Keep not you silence, O God: hold not your peace, and be not still, O God.

2. For, lo, your enemies make a tumult: and they that hate you have lifted up the head.

3. They have taken crafty counsel against your people and consulted against your hidden ones.

4. They have said, Come, and let us cut them off from being a NATION; that (Or so that) the name of ISRAEL may be no more in remembrance. (And this agrees with meaning “#4,” of Matthew 24:34 as THIS NATION will not pass away until all these things are fulfilled as opposed to this generation)

5. For THEY (Speaking of these following TEN Muslim countries who want to wipe Israel off the face of the earth so that Israel will no longer be remembered) have consulted together with one consent: they are confederate against you:

6. The tabernacles of EDOM, and the ISHMAELITES; of MOAB, and the HAGARENES;

7. GEBAL, and AMMON, and AMALEK; the PHILISTINES with the inhabitants of TYRE;

8. ASSURE also is joined with them: they have holpen the children of Lot. Selah.

9. Do unto them as unto the Midianites; as to Sisera, as to Jabin, at the brook of Kison:

10. Which perished at Endor: they became as dung for the earth.

11. Make their nobles like Oreb, and like Zeeb: yea, all their princes as Zebah, and as Zalmunna:

12. Who said, Let us take to ourselves the houses of God in possession.

13. O my God, make them like a wheel; as the stubble before the wind.

14. As the fire burns a wood, and as the flame sets the mountains on fire;

15. So persecute them with your tempest, and make them afraid with your storm.

16. Fill their faces with shame; that they may seek thy name, O LORD.

17. Let them be confounded and troubled for ever; yea, let them be put to shame, and perish:

18. That man may know that You, whose name alone is YAHWEH, are the most high over all the earth.”

For a deeper understanding of who the antichrist is and what the MARK of the beast will be please read the study called “COULD ISLAM BE THE MARK OF THE BEAST!”

But for now, let us continue this study in God's word on the TRUE meaning of Matthew 24:34 “THIS GENERATION” by reading the next two verses, Matthew 24:8,9.

“Matthew 24:8.  All these are the beginning of sorrows.

Matthew 24:9.  Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and you shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake.”

QUESTION #6.

In all honesty to yourself and to God, were Christians between 30 AD and 70 AD hated by ALL nations?

I believe that these verses better fit the much longer span of time of nearly 2000 years. Yes, the Christians were first persecuted by the Jewish nation and then by the Roman Empire but basically every other Gentile nation was open to hearing the gospel of Jesus Christ. The exponential growth of the church was what worried the leaders of the Jewish religion and even the leaders of the Roman Empire. After the first 3 1/2 years of preaching the gospel to the Jews ONLY and God turned to the Gentiles the church became predominately a Gentile church. So I do not see ALL nations hating Christians in the first-century like they do today. Next verse.

“Matthew 24:10.  And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.”

QUESTION #7.

How many Christians were offended enough to betray one another and to hate one another between 30 AD and 70 AD?

Yes, Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus but Jesus said that MANY will be offended. So again, this verse better fits MANY Christians being offended after nearly 2000 years of divisions in the church body. Just look around at some church denominations that FEAR their followers even “visiting” another church denomination. Now, to me, I see the mark of the beast as DENYING Jesus, as in, by taking the mark of the beast you will be required to deny Jesus as the Christ, the Son of the living God. So one possible meaning of “betraying one another” in verse 10 is that some weaker Christians will even turn their own flesh and blood-related family members over to those enforcing to take the mark of the beast just to save their own heads from being beheaded. Let us read the next three verses in Matthew chapter 24.

“Matthew 24:11.  And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.

Matthew 24:12.  And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold

Matthew 24:13.  But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.”

QUESTION #8.

How MANY false prophets were there that caused many to be deceived between 30 AD and 70 AD?

Again, these verses better fit the span of time being much longer than 40 years. Christianity was just getting started and the joy and zeal of new Christians being added to the church daily, does not sound like the love of MANY growing cold so quickly in just one single generation. You have to remember that those disciples of Jesus in the first-century generation were EYE-WITNESSES of Jesus. For forty days Jesus showed himself to be alive forevermore by many infallible proofs. So NO, to me, the very eyewitness of Jesus did NOT grow cold and lose their first love. In fact, early church writings teach us that all of the Apostles of Jesus were martyred for their faith in Jesus except for the Apostle John who wrote the Book of Revelation. Next verse.

“Matthew 24:14.  And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the END come.”

QUESTION #9.

In all honesty to yourself and to God, was the gospel of Jesus Christ TRULY preached in the entire world in just forty years between 30 AD and 70 AD? And did the END COME in 70 AD?

Even in our day with the modern technology of the printing press, the radio, the television, the Internet, thousands of churches, and millions of Christians we have just begun to reach the entire world with the gospel.

Yes, there are a few verses that could be “interpreted” that the gospel was preached to the entire world in the first century.

Please read  Colossians 1:5,6,23.

“For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof you heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel

6.  Which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and brings forth fruit, as it does also in you, since the day you heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth:...

...23.  If you continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which you have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;”

Keep in mind the entire context of Matthew 24:34 that Jesus says that both heaven and earth will PASS AWAY but his words will not pass away or fail to come to pass and be fulfilled just like he prophesied. Let us skip ahead and read the immediate context of Matthew 24:34 concerning the true meaning of the original Greek text that is translated as “THIS generation” in the King James Bible.

Please read Matthew 24:32-35.

The Lesson of the Fig Tree

“Now learn a PARABLE of the FIG TREE; (First of all, this is a “parable” and we must not take every word of any parable literally. It is the general overall meaning of the entire parable that is the intended meaning. Also, most every Bible scholar will tell you that the “FIG TREE” is symbolic language referring to the “NATION” of Israel as in, the race of the Hebrew people that God has chosen) When his branch is yet tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is nigh: (Jesus is teaching us to watch for the SIGNS in the NATION of Israel to know the time of the end is near. In other words, Jesus is saying that you know the SIGNS of the natural fig tree that tells you when summer is near approaching)

33  So likewise you, (Watch for the SIGNS in ISRAEL. And) when you shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors

34.  Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things are fulfilled. (Remember the THREE questions that the disciples asked Jesus back in verse 3. When will the Temple and the city of Jerusalem be destroyed? What is the SIGN of your COMING? And when is the END of the WORLD? Jesus said many things but he said the END is not yet. And in truth, there are actually TWO ENDS of the world. There is the END of THIS AGE or this PRESENT world and then there is the END of the Millennial AGE or the end of the world yet to come. BOTH ages will indeed pass away but heaven and earth will not pass away, as in, melt with fervent heat until the END of the world, YET to come, the LITERAL 1000 year-long reign of Jesus)

35.  Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.”

What some Christians fail to realize is that God has NOT forgotten the NATION of ISRAEL. God has promised that He will turn AGAIN to the nation of Israel a SECOND time which is DURING the literal 1000 year reign of Jesus. There are THREE harvests of firstfruits unto God, according to 1 Corinthians 15:20-28 where Paul says that every man will be resurrected and given eternal life in their OWN ORDER. Jesus was the first of the firstfruits. THEN we who are in Jesus Christ AT his COMING. And then the third and final harvest of the saints will be at the END of the 1000 year reign of Jesus in the world yet to come. Please read the study “THE 1000 YEAR REIGN OF JESUS LITERAL?” My point right now is that the GOSPEL will ALSO be preached DURING the Millennial age as well. So no matter how many verses one interprets to mean that the gospel was ALREADY preached in the entire world by 70 AD, the END of the world did not come in 70 AD. Jesus did NOT return in 70 AD either visibly or invisibly because ALL these things Jesus said have not yet come to pass.

But HOW can we know for SURE that Jesus did NOT return ALREADY?

#1. Do YOU have an IMMORTAL body right now? If the answer is NO, then Jesus has not already returned. See 1 Corinthians 15:20-28 and 1 John 2:3.

#2. Are there WARS still being fought on the earth? If the answer is YES, then Jesus has not already returned. See Isaiah 2:4 and Micah 4:3.

#3. Have all the weapons of war been collected by Jesus and burned up, as in, the weapons made of metal melted down and turned into farming equipment and the weapons made of wood used as firewood for seven years? If the answer is NO, then Jesus has not already returned. See Isaiah 2:4, Micah 4:3, and Ezekiel 39:9.

#4. Does the lion eat grass like the ox? If the answer is NO, then Jesus has not already returned. See Isaiah 11:7.

#5. Does the wolf lay down with the lamb to not harm the lamb? If the answer is NO, then Jesus has not already returned. See Isaiah 11:6 and Isaiah 65:25.

#6. Is there sickness and disease still on the earth? If the answer is YES, then Jesus has not already returned. See Acts 10:38 and Revelation 20:1-3. For you see Satan is the one who oppresses people with sickness and disease and he will be BOUND in the bottomless pit at the COMING of Jesus.

#7. Are there still premature deaths? Do people still die before the age of 100 years old? If the answer is YES, then Jesus has not already returned. See Isaiah 65:20.

I do not care how many verses of Scripture that Christians INTERPRET to mean that Jesus had to have already returned, they have NOT truly interpreted them correctly in the LIGHT of the WHOLE word of Almighty God. Let us continue with the verse by verse study of Matthew chapter 24.

The Abomination of Desolation

“Matthew 24:15.  When you, therefore, shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso reads, let him understand:)

QUESTION #10.

In the light of knowing that there is DUAL fulfillment in prophecy, can anyone dogmatically demand that the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD is the ONLY destruction that the city of Jerusalem will ever see?

Remember the very first thing that Jesus said when he was asked the three questions of when will the temple be destroyed, what is the sign of your coming, and when is the end of the world? The FIRST thing that Jesus said was to not to let anyone DECEIVE you. So in truth, does the ONE destruction of Jerusalem prove beyond any shadow of a doubt that Jerusalem will NEVER be destroyed again? To me, the answer is a definite NO! Please read the study “WHEN IS THE MIDST OF THE 70TH WEEK?” In that study, you will learn that the midst of the week actually began when God turned to the Gentiles with the gospel of Jesus Christ. In other words, it is impossible for there to be a middle of the week in the PRE-tribulation rapture theory. The middle of the week in the pre-trib theory is just a dot on a chart having NO TIME for anything to occur during the so-called middle of the pre-trib week. But for now, let us continue with this study on the TRUE meaning of the phrase THIS GENERATION in Matthew 24:34 by reading the next five verses.

“Matthew 24:16.  Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:

Matthew 24:17.  Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take anything out of his house:

Matthew 24:18.  Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes.

Matthew 24:19.  And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days!

Matthew 24:20.  But pray you that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the Sabbath day:”

QUESTION #11.

Does the fact that these things happened in 70 AD prove beyond any shadow of a doubt that they will NEVER happen again?

I do not doubt that Christians fled when they saw the Roman army about to attack Jerusalem. But to me, this does NOT even come close to proving the Jesus returned in 70 AD. There are FAR TOO many verses that contradict the INTERPRETATION of the “THIS” generation in Matthew 24:34 as being the first-century GENERATION that would not pass away before all these things were fulfilled. So to me, I must conclude that Jesus INTENDED his words to mean one of the following or perhaps all of the following meanings.

#1. Did Jesus intend his words to mean THAT generation or the SAME generation at the END will not pass until after all these things have come to pass?

#2. Did Jesus intend his words to mean the generation at the end of this PRESENT world?

#3. Did Jesus intend his words to mean the generation at the end of the world YET to come?

#4. Did Jesus intend his words to mean the word “generation” to have been translated as this NATION of Israel?

#5. Did Jesus intend his words to mean the word “generation” to have been translated as THIS AGE as opposed to the generation?

Any Christian who is honestly seeking the TRUTH will at least ponder every possible interpretation of every verse of Scripture related to the subject on which they are seeking the truth. And the meanings of the original Greek words allow for all these interpretations to be valid interpretations of Matthew 24:34. But always remember that whatever one interprets a SINGLE verse to mean then that interpretation MUST AGREE with every verse in the Bible. And if even one other verse of Scripture contradicts the interpretation that one concludes then they have NOT concluded the CORRECT interpretation of that single verse of Scripture. Next verse.

“Matthew 24:21.  For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.”

QUESTION #12.

In all honesty to God and to yourself was 70 AD the worst thing that has happened to Christians and the Jewish people? Was 70 AD the worst thing the world has ever seen since the beginning of the world to that time and nothing WORSE has EVER happened after 70 AD?

Again, I believe this verse better fits the yet future fulfillment of the WRATH of God which has a DUAL fulfillment. Certainly, I do agree that the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD was a judgment of God for the Jews as a NATION rejecting Jesus as their Messiah but in no way was the Roman war in 70 AD the prophesied WRATH of God. There are simply way too many things surrounding the wrath of God that was NOT fulfilled in 70 AD. And only some of which I will cover in this particular study in God's word. Next verse.

“Matthew 24:22.  And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened.”

QUESTION #13.

WHEN were the days SHORTENED between 30 AD and 70 AD?

Notice that Jesus said those days SHALL be shortened. And the only way for days to be shortened is for those days to NOT be WRITTEN down as prophecy. And that happened in Revelation chapter 10 when John was told NOT to WRITE down the seven THUNDERS lest all flesh is destroyed.

Please read Revelation 10:1-6.

“And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire:

2  And he had in his hand a little book open: and he set his right foot upon the sea, and his left foot on the earth,

3.  And cried with a loud voice, as when a lion roars: and when he had cried, seven thunders uttered their voices.

4.  And when the seven thunders had uttered their voices, I was about to write: and I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Seal up those things which the seven thunders uttered, and write them not

5.  And the angel which I saw stand upon the sea and upon the earth lifted up his hand to heaven,

6.  And sware by him that lives forever and ever, who created heaven, and the things that therein are, and the earth, and the things that therein are, and the sea, and the things which are therein, that there should be time no longer:”

QUESTION #14.

HOW could the days have been shortened between 30 AD and 70 AD when the Book of Revelation had NOT YET been written?

According to all the evidence, the Book of Revelation was written in 96 AD. Please read the article on another website called “When Was the Book Of Revelation Written?” But for now, let us continue this verse by verse study of Matthew chapter 24 by reading the next two verses.

“Matthew 24:23.  Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo here is Christ, or there; believe it not.

Matthew 24:24.  For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.”

QUESTION #15.

Again, how many false Christs were there during the short 40 years between 30 AD and 70 AD that did mighty signs and wonders so great that if it were possible they would have deceived the very elect?

Now, while there have been many people claiming to be the Messiah at the end of the last days, the one in the “desert” is yet to come. I believe that Jesus left us a clue that the antichrist will be in a secret place in the desert in the Middle East that is called the Assyrian in the Bible. I believe that he will be a Muslim who teaches and unites ten Muslim countries in a caliphate to make war with Israel. But first, he will work miracles before the Muslim people in their land by the power of Satan. And if it were possible even some Christians could become deceived by his miracles but then they would have to DENY that Jesus is the SON OF the living God and that Jesus died on the cross for the sins of the world so that whosoever believes the true gospel of Jesus Christ would be saved. Please read the study “COULD ISLAM BE THE MARK OF THE BEAST?” But for now, let us read the next three verses in Matthew chapter 24.

“Matthew 24:25.  Behold, I have told you before.

Matthew 24:26.  Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not

Matthew 24:27.  For as the lightning comes out of the east, and shines even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.”

QUESTION #16.

Did Jesus return VISIBLY in 70 AD because that is what Jesus intends his words to mean concerning his VISIBLE every eye shall see him COMING.?

Otherwise, Jesus would not have warned us NOT to follow another MAN that will be hiding in a secret place out in the desert sending out his messengers to gather people to him saying come and see the Messiah. Jesus makes it very clear that no person needs to tell you that it is lightening because you can see the lightning for yourself. Jesus compares his COMING to be like lightning. And lightning is in the SKY in verse 27 shining FROM the EAST and traveling WEST across the SKY. Hint, hint. Jesus will return in the clouds in the SKY from the EAST. This also means that our CHANGE from mortal to immortal will take place QUICKLY like a FLASH of lightning. That is why Jesus WARNS us that he is coming QUICKLY! There will be no time to repent after people all over the world SEE the Son of Man, Jesus, coming in clouds of glory and POWER because the rapture of the church will have already just taken place. Acts 1 teaches us that Jesus will return VISIBLY just as men saw Jesus ascend into heaven and the clouds received him out of the SIGHT. In other words, REVERSE the order of events. Jesus returns to the earth to first be in the clouds OUT of SIGHT. Then the rapture takes place. And then all those left behind SEE the SIGN of the Son of Man coming in POWER to make WAR on the armies fighting against Israel. Then, on the same DAY, 1000 years later, Jesus will descend all the way down to the earth in the city of God called the New Jerusalem. Next verse.

Matthew 24:28.  For wheresoever the carcass is, there will the eagles be gathered together.

To me, this verse means that gathering of the elect together by the angels and then taken to the place called Armageddon to meet Jesus in the AIR to be given the honor to help Jesus execute the wrath upon the Islamic Muslim armies making war with Israel. This is another reason why Jesus did NOT return in 70 AD. For you see, Jesus himself with lead his armies of the saints and the angels to personally END the war against Israel with the Battle of Armageddon.

Please read Revelation 19:11-21.

“And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness, he does judge and makes WAR. (When Jesus returns there will be NO DOUBT. The whole world will KNOW that Jesus has returned because Jesus will make WAR from the AIR against the armies fighting against Israel. First, there will be WARS and talk of more wars in the Middle East against the Christians and the Jews. Then ten united Islamic Muslim countries will be united to make all-out WAR against the land of Israel. And that is when Jesus will return to rescue a REMNANT of Israel. But right before people SEE Jesus in the air, they will see the angels riding in “CHARIOTS” which they will think are UFOs snatching or ABDUCTING people off of the earth. Please read the study “WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT UFOS?” Then they will see people being CAUGHT up into the flying craft and they will run for their lives unless they are Christians. For you see, it will ONLY be Christians that will be caught up in the rapture of the church. Then all the “chariots” of God will meet Jesus in the AIR to make WAR with the armies fighting against Israel that will be making Jerusalem a desolation and that are trying to kill all the Jews and the Christians)

12.  His eyes were as a flame of fire, (As in, Jesus will be extremely angry at those who are destroying his people and the earth) and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. (Speaking of Jesus’ NEW name that every knee will bow down to in the world to come which will begin right after Jesus executes the wrath of God AT his coming)

13.  And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. (Again, Jesus will lead the Battle of Armageddon personally and his own white robe will be read with the blood that he will slay)

14.  And the ARMIES which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. (This is speaking of both the army of the saints and the army of the angels that will come WITH Jesus at his return)

15.  And out of his mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: (I believe that Jesus will ANNOUNCE his intent to make war from the flying UFOs or chariots of God before he smites the nations) and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: (I believe that once the nation of Israel recognizes that Jesus is their Messiah that they will willingly and openly receive Jesus as the Lord and Savior as well as their King. But the Gentile nations, especially the radical Islamic Muslim nations will not willingly submit to bowing down to Jesus and Jesus will rule THEM with a ROD of IRON) and he treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.

16.  And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name is written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

17.  And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God; (I believe that this is symbolic language referring to Christians mounting up on wings, as in flying craft AS the wings of eagles as we will be given the HONOR to execute the VENGEANCE of God, according to Psalm 149:1-6  and Revelation 18:4-8 to give them DOUBLE what they gave to Christians)

18.  That you may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great. (Not literally eat their flesh but like enjoy a good satisfying “supper” vengeance that is JUST is satisfying. Also, the eagles could be both symbolic and literal and the literal eagles will literally eat the slain bodies of flesh till only their bones are left to pick up and bury)

19  And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make WAR against him that sat on the horse, and against his ARMY. (Now, to my knowledge, NOTHING even close to this happened in 70 AD which is another reason why Jesus did NOT return at any time in history)

20.  And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. (Again, there was NO mark of the beast in the first century. In fact, no Christians in 70 AD even heard of the mark of the beast until John wrote the Book of Revelation in 96 AD)

21.  And the remnant was slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.”

Again, there was no army in the SKY that came and STOPPED the Roman armies from killing the Jews and the Christians in 70 AD. And thus, there was no SIGN of the Son of man COMING in great clouds and POWER to make WAR against the armies that were fighting against Israel in 70 AD. And that proves beyond any shadow of a doubt that Jesus did NOT return in 70 AD. Lets us move on to the next verse in Matthew chapter 24.

The Coming of the Son of Man

“Matthew 24:29.  Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:”

 QUESTION #17.

Did all these SIGNS in the SUN, the MOON, and the STARS falling from heaven like figs off a fig tree shaken by a mighty wind happen in 70 AD?

Now some of the Jesus already returned Christians, will argue that there were solar and lunar eclipses in the first-century but eclipses will not cause people to FEAR and have heart attacks like UFOs being shot down by the hundreds or even thousands all over the world.

Please read Luke 21:25;26.

“And there shall be SIGNS in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth DISTRESS of nations, with PERPLEXITY; the sea and the waves roaring

26.  Men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.”

Again, solar and lunar eclipses do not cause DISTRESS and perplexity to entire nations and cause people to have heart attacks for FEAR of seeing these SIGNS in the sun, the moon and the STARS falling from heaven by the hundreds or perhaps even thousands like the figs falling off a fig tree being SHAKEN by a mighty wind. See Revelation 6:12-17. But for now, let us continue with the next verse in Matthew chapter 24.

“Matthew 24:30  And then shall appear the SIGN of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall SEE the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.”

 QUESTION #18.

Did ALL the tribes of the earth MOURN when the Roman army destroyed Jerusalem in 70 AD? Did every eye SEE Jesus coming in clouds of heaven with POWER at any time in history?

NO! And for that reason alone Jesus has not already returned at any time in history. Just because it has been a long time and it may seem like Jesus is not coming does not mean that Christians should make their own man-made doctrine of some INVISIBLE return of Jesus that has absolutely NO Scriptural support whatsoever. Already returned Jesus believers are DECEIVING Christians to give up looking for the return of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. You are basically MOCKING the words of Jesus by claiming that Jesus has already returned. There is NO secret return of Jesus prophesied in the Bible. There is no return of Jesus appearing as a reincarnated man or woman prophesied in the Bible. There is NO secret rapture of the church prophesied in the Bible.

There is a cult in China that teaches that Jesus has returned called the Church of Almighty God. And after it grew, the evil spirit that was behind the woman that claims she is Almighty God, Jesus Christ, has brought the evil spirit of murder into the cult which is now labeled as the murderous cult. Any spirit that turns the TRUTH into a LIE is an evil spirit. So TRY the spirits and the teachings of church denominations to see if they are of God or if they are of Satan. The Bible itself does not teach that Jesus is Almighty God. Please read the study “IS JESUS ALMIGHTY GOD?” But for now, let us move to the next verse.

“Matthew 24:31  And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.”

 QUESTION #19.

Do YOU have your glorified immortal body right NOW? Have YOU SEEN Jesus as he is in his new glorified immortal body? Have you been caught up into the air and gathered together by the angels to meet Jesus in the AIR over the place called Armageddon? Did such an event take place in 70 AD? Did such an event of angels gathering together the elect caught up into the air together from one end of the sky to the other end of the sky happen at any time in history?

NO! And that is why Jesus has not already returned at any point in history. The second coming of Jesus is yet in the FUTURE. And if you do not believe this core truth then you are TWISTING the Scriptures to fit your own private interpretation. Again. please read the study  “IS THE 1000 YEAR REIGN OF JESUS LITERAL?” But for now, let us continue with the next four verses in Matthew chapter 24.

The Lesson of the Fig Tree

“Matthew 24:32  Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh:

Matthew 24:33  So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors.

Matthew 24:34  Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things are fulfilled.

Matthew 24:35  Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.”

We already covered these verses when we skipped ahead to read the immediate context of verse 34. And from what we have covered so far Jesus was DEFINITELY NOT referring to the first-century generation in Matthew 24:34. Again, there are many other possible meanings such as THAT generation or THIS AGE shall not end until all these things come to pass. Or even the NATION of Israel shall not pass until all is fulfilled because of the FACT that the LITERAL END of the world, as in, heaven and earth literally passing away in the fiery final judgment will not happen until the end of the world that is YET to come. And during the world to come the NATION of Israel will live and die from GENERATION to GENERATION in their mortal bodies. So if the word ALL is to be taken literally then the correct translation should be THAT generation, THAT age, or even THAT NATION shall not pass until ALL these things are fulfilled. Next verse.

No Man Knows That Day and Hour

“Matthew 24:36.  But of that day and hour knows no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.”

 QUESTION #20.

Does it make sense to you for Jesus to CONTRADICT himself?

Well, that is what the INTERPRETATION of this generation to mean the first-century generation is doing. That interpretation is contradicting the words of Jesus saying that he does NOT know when his coming will be. Therefore, Jesus would NOT intend his words to mean before the generation standing before him would not die until he has returned because Jesus would have know when he would return. Jesus says in Matthew 16:28 that some will be standing here that shall not taste of death till he returns.

Please read Matthew 16:28.

“Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.”

This verse also has several possible meanings.

#1. Some of the wicked standing here in this place will not die UNTIL they SEE the Son of man coming in his kingdom.

#2. Some of YOU standing here with me right now will not taste of death until you see me returning to rule in my kingdom. But even this interpretation does not mean that the first-century disciples would not die “physically”. For you see, ALL the dead IN Jesus Christ will NOT taste of death. They pass from death to life but they do not receive their immortal bodies until the second coming of Jesus.

#3. Some Christians will remain alive unto my coming stand right here in this place who will not taste of death. But rather they will be CHANGED in a moment and in a twinkling of an eye at my COMING.

#4. Some of the remnants of the NATION of Israel standing here who SEE me coming in great clouds of glory to deliver them will not DIE UNTIL they die a natural death during the literal 1000 year reign of Jesus. For you see, in the world yet to come the remnant of the NATION of Israel will live from GENERATION to GENERATION and die natural deaths. For simplicity, think of the literal 1000 year reign of Jesus as another church age.

Let us move to the next verse in Matthew chapter 24 and read the next six verses.

“Matthew 24:37  But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

Matthew 24:38  For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,

Matthew 24:39  And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

Matthew 24:40  Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left

Matthew 24:41  Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left

Matthew 24:42  Watch therefore: for you know NOT what hour your Lord does come.”

 QUESTION #21.

What does the flood CAME and took them all away mean to you? What does one will be taken and the other left mean to you? Were people taken and left in 70 AD? Were ALL the CHRISTIANS taken in 70 AD?

Now, to me, being taken by the flood means that the wicked were destroyed by the flood of Noah. The wicked ignored the preaching of Noah and they continued on as if the JUDGMENT DAY of the FLOOD was not coming and they were TAKEN BY the flood and destroyed.

As far as the one is taken and the other left, I believe it can be interpreted both ways where the wicked are taken and destroyed and the righteous are left alive. Or the righteous IN Jesus Christians will be taken up in the rapture and the unsaved will be left to suffer the wrath of God. And by Jesus saying this phrase TWICE he may have intended the first phrase to be the taken up of those in Jesus Christ and leaving behind the unfruitful crop in the field. And the second phrase to mean taking the workers of iniquity to be destroyed and the workers of righteousness to be left alive in their mortal bodies to go into the Millennial reign of Jesus. To me, Jesus is talking about his second coming in these verses. And we all agree that Christians will be CAUGHT UP into the AIR to meet Jesus in the AIR and so we will forever be with the Lord. You can Spiritualize every verse in the Bible if you want but for me, I am going to believe in the POST-tribulation PRE-LITERAL-Millennial second coming of Jesus to RAPTURE the church to rule and reign WITH Jesus for a LITERAL 1000 years ON the earth. Please read ALL the studies on the end times under the heading >>>PROPHECY-THE COMING OF JESUS!<<< But for now, let us continue this study by reading the next two verses.

“Matthew 24:43  But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up.

Matthew 24:44  Therefore, be ye also ready: for in such an hour as you think not the Son of man comes.”

 QUESTION #22.

Was Matthew chapter 24 written to the JEWS or to the CHURCH?

The reason that I ask this question is that the Temple was no longer “sacred” to Christians, as in, Christians did not USE the Temple to offering sacrifices to God as the Jews. And again, I believe that most Christians fled Judea when then saw the Roman armies coming. And seeing that the Jews did NOT receive Jesus as their Messiah after the destruction of their Temple and the city of Jerusalem is just another proof that Jesus did NOT return in 70 AD. Jesus knew that the Temple sacrifices would come to an end. Jesus knew that his shed blood would initiate the NEW COVENANT. Jesus knew that Almighty God was tired of the Old Covenant and the Law of Moses contained in ORDINANCES. But the destruction of the Temple was NOT the only thing that Jesus prophesied would take place BEFORE his return and before the END of the WORLD. So ANY generation AFTER the destruction of the Temple could have been the generation that would see his coming IF SO BE that the REST of the things were fulfilled in those generations. But they were NOT fulfilled in ANY generation thus far.

So then, it is the Christians who are told to WATCH for the coming of Jesus and NOT the Jews in Matthew chapter 24.

 QUESTION #23.

Were the destruction of the Temple and the city of Jerusalem the ONLY SIGNS given to the church to WATCH for?

Obviously not! So to try and FORCE all the things that Jesus prophesied to have already been fulfilled is twisting the Scriptures to make them fit their own private interpretation of the Scriptures. Again, were the destruction of the Temple and the city of Jerusalem even called SIGNS given to the church to WATCH for?

In my own opinion, I say NO, it was not specifically called a SIGN of the coming of Jesus. But Jesus did say that when we see Jerusalem surrounded by ARMIES to flee that area of the world and do not enter into the surrounding countries. And the reason is that there will be more intense persecution and killing of Christians in the Middle Eastern countries during the ENDING of the LAST days. Revelation 11:18 teaches us that God will destroy those who are destroying the earth. And when thinking about HOW Christians are told to flee QUICKLY without taking anything with them leads me to believe that the DESOLATION toward the very end of the 3 1/2 years of the great tribulation will be a nuclear weapon. And Jesus will return to STOP the destruction of the earth. And the earth was NOT being destroyed in 70 AD.

Also, Jesus said when in the hour that you think NOT that the Son of man is coming then THAT is WHEN he will come. Jesus said shall I find FAITH on the earth when I come? So do NOT lose hope of the coming of Jesus. And do not fear death. For whether we live or die we KNOW that we will be with the Lord forever. Let us now read the last seven verses in Matthew chapter 24.

“Matthew 24:45.  Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord has made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season

Matthew 24:46.  Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he comes shall find so doing

Matthew 24:47.  Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods

Matthew 24:48.  But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delays his coming;

Matthew 24:49.  And shall begin to smite his fellow servants, and to eat and drink with the drunken;

Matthew 24:50.  The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looks NOT for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of,

Matthew 24:51.  And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

These last seven verses are teaching us to OCCUPY until our Lord returns. And to ME, if one sincerely believes that Jesus has ALREADY returned what hope are they looking for in the future? To me, they are NOT TRULY LOOKING for the COMING of Jesus because they believe that Jesus has ALREADY come in 70 AD or in some other point in time in history.

Now, those Christians who believe that Jesus returned as the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost are still looking for his VISIBLE second coming but they have NO SIGNS to look for because they sincerely believe that all of the Book of Revelation and the signs in Matthew 24 have already been fulfilled. How SAD! And since they do NOT believe in the LITERAL 1000 year-long reign of Jesus, then the second coming, to them may not be for millions of years.

In 1 John 3:2, we read about having HOPE in the coming of Jesus because when we having that HOPE we will KEEP ourselves from sin. We will be WATCHING and looking for our Lord’s return and we will PURIFY ourselves even as Jesus is pure. And the more signs we see being fulfilled builds our hope of his coming drawing even closer. But in the last four verses of Matthew 24, we see Jesus WARNING us about growing cold and NOT WATCHING for his coming. The colder Christians become the more likely they will return to living in a lifestyle of sin and try to make excuses for they sin comparing themselves with other Christians who are also living in sin. Jesus is definitely giving a WARNING to Christians who are NOT LOOKING for his return. And by looking for the coming of Jesus we should not be setting specific DATES trying to pinpoint the exact HOUR of our Lord's return. For you see, every time those man-made predictions do not come to pass it is like CRYING WOLF so to speak to other Christians who are not strong in their faith.

Now, I myself do indeed believe in the 7000 years plan of God’s salvation. I believe in the LITERAL 1000 year reign of Jesus. I believe that Jesus spoke of THREE days and the THIRD day. And if we take three days to mean 3,000 years then that means that the coming of Jesus will take place close to 2,000 years from 31 AD the year Jesus was resurrected. And that means we are running out of TIME to bring in the HARVEST. So PRAY that the Lord will send MORE laborers into the harvest! BUT if so be that Jesus does not return by the fall of the year 2034 I will still believe that Jesus will return VISIBLY just like he promised. His return might be delayed for reasons unknown to us.
