In other words, is the MAN with whom Jacob WRESTLED until the break of day in Genesis 32:22-32 a THEOPHANY? According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary, a theophany is a visible manifestation of a deity. It is a term used by Trinitarian Christians to mean that a pre-existing God the Son came down from heaven in the Old Testament times in the form of a man and also as an angel. Trinitarian Christians do this to try to prove their doctrine of a Trinity Godhead. But I assure you that the MAN with whom Jacob wrestled was NOT the so-called pre-existing pre-incarnate Son of God. Let us begin this study in God’s word by reading Genesis 32:22-32. And while you read this passage of Scripture, I want you to keep in mind that there are many “hidden” prophecies of Jesus throughout the Scriptures. I will highlight the pronouns referring to the man in green and the pronouns referring to Jacob in yellow to make it easier to follow along. Genesis 32:22-32. “And he (Jacob) rose up that night, (Remember the context teaches us that Jacob is extremely afraid that his brother Esau is going to kill him, his two wives and all his children) and took his two wives, and his two women servants, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford Jabbok. 23. And he took them, and sent them over the brook, and sent over that he had. 24. And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a MAN WITH him until the breaking of the day. ( Notice that it does NOT say that Jacob wrestled WITH the man, but rather, it says a man wrestled WITH Jacob. Remember that Jacob knew that his brother Esau was coming with four hundred men with him and it was at NIGHT. So when the MAN attacked Jacob, Jacob was fighting for his very life) 25. And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled (Back) with him. 26. And he said, Let me go, for the day breaks. And he said, I will not let you go, except you bless me. (The Hebrew word “translated” as “bless me”, has several meanings. It also means to KNEEL which according to the context means kneel down and surrender to me. It also means to CONGRATULATE and to THANK. So Jacob could be saying, I will not let you go until you surrender and thank me for not killing you) 27. And he said unto him, What is your name? And he said, Jacob. 28. And he said, Your NAME shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: (The NAME Israel means he shall RULE as God) FOR (Or for you see) as a PRINCE you have power WITH God and with men, and have PREVAILED. (So to me, this is a PROPHECY of Jesus where Jacob is a SHADOW or FIGURE of Jesus and the angel who wrestled with Jacob is a figure of Satan wrestling with Jesus in HELL for the KEYS and Jesus PREVAILED over the Angel, Satan, to be MADE a PRINCE to rule as God over the earth in the world to come for 1000 years) 29. And Jacob asked him and said, Tell me, I pray you your name. And he said, Wherefore, is it that you ask after my name? And he blessed him there. (Or he YIELDED to Jacob there) 30. And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved. (Or as a hidden PROPHECY my soul was not left in hell and I, the Son of MAN, Jesus have seen the God face to face and he gave me eternal life to be His Prince) 31. And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh. (He was BRUISED or WOUNDED for our transgressions, but we esteemed him smitten by God. However, it was Satan who crucified the Lord of glory. And had Satan KNOWN he would NOT have crucified the Lord of glory, according to 1 Corinthians 2:8) 32. Therefore, the children of Israel eat not of the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of Jacob's thigh in the sinew that shrank.” Now, when we compare Scripture with Scripture, then we learn that the MAN who wrestled WITH Jacob was an ANGEL. But the question is was that angel a good angel or a fallen angel. I mean WHY would a GOOD angel be worried about the DAYLIGHT coming? Please read Hosea 12:2-6. “The LORD has also a controversy with Judah, and will punish Jacob according to his ways; according to his doings will he recompense him. (Let me explain what this verse of Scripture is actually saying in the LIGHT of the WHOLE word of Almighty God. The controversy is will Judah and God is prophesying that He will put the PUNISHMENT of Judah UPON Jacob AKA a prophecy of Jesus BECAUSE OF his ways of RIGHTEOUSNESS. Hosea is using Esua and Jacob wrestling with each other as an ALLEGORY. You will see this in a moment when you read verse 4) 3. He took his brother by the heel in the womb, and by his strength he had power with God: (Hosea the prophet is teaching us that we are to understand Jacob and Esau wrestling in the womb as being is an ALLEGORY of Jesus wrestling in the womb of the earth with the fallen angel, Satan, who lost his birthright. And Jesus prevailed by the power that he had WITH God. And thus, Jacob is a FIGURE of Jesus) 4. Yea, he (Figuratively referring to Jesus as a hidden prophecy) had power over the ANGEL, and PREVAILED: he (The Son of MAN, Jesus) wept, and made supplication unto Him: he found Him in Bethel, (Hosea is referring to Almighty God appearing to Jacob in a DREAM and Jacob named that place Bethel which means the house of God) and there He spake with us; (Almighty God also spoke with Abraham at a place called Bethel) 5. Even the LORD God of hosts; the LORD is His memorial. (What the Son of MAN did for his God and Father will be REMEMBERED by the good angels to never even think about rebelling against their creator like Lucifer and the fallen angels did) 6. Therefore, turn you to your God: keep mercy and judgment, and wait on your God continually.” The Son of MAN, Jesus was MADE Lord and God under his God and Father after the cross and resurrection. And we are waiting on our Lord and Savior to return and we will rule and reign WITH him over the earth in the world to come. In verse 4, Jacob WEPT and in Hebrews 5:7 we learn that Jesus wept with tears making strong crying unto God because he FEARED death was afraid that God would leave his soul in hell. Hebrews 5:7. “Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto Him that was able to SAVE him from death, and was heard in that he FEARED;” Now we all know that Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, but not all Christians know that Jesus prayed to God while he was in HELL. Remember Jesus explained to us that Jonah being the BELLY of the whale is prophetically speaking of Jesus being in the belly of HELL or in the heart of the earth, which was the holding place of all the spirits and souls of the dead. But when Jesus was resurrected from the dead he led the righteous souls and spirits that were being held captive on the paradise side of hell out WITH him. Let us read that prophecy in Jonah. Jonah 2:1,2. “Then Jonah (Prophetically speaking of Jesus) prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish's belly, (Prophetically referring to the bell of HELL in the heart of the earth) 2. And said, I (Prophetically speaking of Jesus) cried by reason of my affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of HELL cried I, and You heard my voice.” Now let us read Psalm 18:4-7. “The sorrows of death compassed me, and the floods of ungodly men made me afraid. 5. The sorrows of HELL compassed about me: (Or the region and destruction of HELL surrounded me) the snares of death prevented me. (Or the noose of death was right before my face. In other words, this is not a dream, I am actually in HELL and I am sore afraid) 6. In my DISTRESS I called upon the LORD, and CRIED (Strong crying) unto my God: (Who was able to save my soul from hell) He heard my voice out of His temple, and my cry came before Him, even into His ears. 7. Then the earth shook and trembled; (Or there was a great earthquake when my God resurrected me and delivered my soul from hell) the foundations of the hills also moved and were shaken, (This is speaking figuratively of the principalities and powers were also moved and shaken) because He was wroth.” So to ME, Jacob is clearly a FIGURE of Jesus in Genesis 3:22-32. So how could the MAN be a so-called Theophany of a pre-existing Son of God when it is Jacob that actually PICTURES Jesus in so many ways. #1. The ANGEL begs Jacob to let him go, which clearly shows that Jacob was victorious over the ANGEL. #2. The Son of God is never called an angel. In fact, God made Jesus as little LOWER than the angels. And Hebrews 2: clearly teaches that God NEVER said to ANY of the angels at ANY TIME, this day I have begotten you, I WILL BE a Father to him and he SHALL be a Son to me. Please read Hebrews 1:5. “For unto which of the angels said he at any time, You are my Son, this day have I begotten you? And again, I WILL BE to him a Father, and he SHALL BE to Me a Son?” Please read the three part study called O-14. When did Jesus Become God's Son? Part 1 But for now, let us read Hebrews 1:1,2 which should prove to any and all Christians who are TRULY seeking the truth that God never even one singular time spoken to anyone during the Old Testament times by His Son. In other words, BEFORE Jesus was baptized in the River Jordan and SENT by God into the world, the Son of God never spoke one word FROM God to people. And that is because God did NOT have a Son in the eternity past. How can some Christians not understand what a PROPHECY is that says I WILL BE to him a Father and he SHALL BE a Son to Me? I mean WHY would God speak a PROPHECY to one day beget Himself a Son IF God already had THAT Son by His side in the eternity past as some Christians claim? Please read Hebrews 1:1,2. “God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spoke in time past unto the fathers BY the prophets, 2. Has in these last days spoken unto us by His Son, (Speaking of His HUMAN Son, the Son of MAN, Jesus) whom He has APPOINTED HEIR of all things, by whom (Or more correctly FOR whom) also He made the worlds;” Now, one of the REASONS as to WHY Trinitarian Christians “interpret” verses in the Old Testament as being so-called “Theophany” in the passage of Scripture in Exodus 33:18-23 when it is combined with the words of Jesus saying the “phrase” no man has seen God. Let us read both passages of Scripture first and then I will explain the “Trinitarian INTERPRETATION” and WHY they feel that some verses in the Old Testament HAVE to be a Theophany of the Son of God. And they base their interpretation on the argument that since no man can see God they they must have seem God the Son. But yet they are trying the prove that Jesus IS Almighty God Himself. So to me, they are contradicting themselves. For you see IF Jesus IS Almighty God Himself and no man can see Almighty God then HOW did men see Jesus. Their argument makes no sense. Here is the true meaning of Exodus 33:19-23. Exodus 33:18-23. “And he said, I beseech You, show me Your GLORY. 19. And He said, I will make all My goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the NAME of the LORD before you; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will show mercy. 20. And He said, You can NOT see my face: for there shall no MAN see me, and live. 21. And the LORD said, Behold, there is a place by Me, and you shall stand upon a rock: 22. And it shall come to pass, while My GLORY passes by, that I will put you in a clift of the rock, and will cover you with my hand while I pass by:” So then, is Almighty God Yahweh a LIAR? Does the Scripture not say that God put Moses in a crack in a rock and COVERED Moses so that Moses could NOT SEE Yahweh’s GLORY? And thus, Moses did NOT see God. And therefore, we must interpret other verses that SEEM as if men have seen God and lived in the LIGHT of Exodus 33:18-23 and the words of Jesus in John 1:18. John 1:18. “No MAN has SEEN God at ANY TIME; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he has DECLARED him.” The Greek word translated as SEEN also means to PERCEIVE God or to DISCERN God clearly. In other words, SEEN also means UNDERSTOOD God at any time and the Son of God EXPLAINED or SHOWED us the Father as the ONLY TRUE God, according to John 17:1-3. Now, in 1 John 4:12 we have another verse of Scripture that has the phrase “no man has SEEN God at ANY TIME” in it. So let us go ahead and read that verse of Scripture as well. 1 John 4:12. “No MAN has SEEN God at ANY TIME. If we love one another, God dwells in us, and his love is perfected in us.” John uses a different Greek word here but it also means PERCEIVE. So John’s INTENDED meaning must be determined by the CONTEXT. In other words, did John INTEND his words to me that no man has PERCEIVED God at any time. Or did John intend his words to mean that no man has literally SEEN God’s BEING. Let us read the next verse and see if we can learn what John truly intends his words to mean in verse 12. 1 John 4:13. “Hereby we KNOW that we dwell in Him, and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit.” So then, CLEARLY the Apostle John INTENDS his words to mean that now man has PERCEIVED God at any time. But NOW, as new creatures in Jesus Christ we can KNOW God is real and that He is dwelling in us BECAUSE we can FEEL His presence when we stir up the GIFT of the Holy Spirit dwelling in us. God is INVISIBLE so we cannot KNOW His be literally SEEING Him. But we CAN KNOW Him by PERCEIVING His PRESENCE. So then, in truth, it is NOT sound Biblical teaching to COMBINE John 1:18 and 1 John 4:12 WITH Exodus 33:18-23 and try to make the argument that people in the Old Testament MUST have SEEN the Son of God, the second person of a Godhead Trinity God. For you see the Trinitarian argument is that IF they saw God the Father then they would have DIED so they MUST have seen God the Son. But when you truly consider what Trinitarian Christians are actually saying when they argue that people saw God the Son instead of seeing God Himself. They are actually saying that the Son of God is NOT Almighty God because IF he was they whoever saw him would DIE. So the Trinitarian argument that no man can see God Himself but they CAN see God the Son makes no sense even if it was Biblical. In other words, the whole point of the Godhead Trinity theory is to try to prove that Jesus is Almighty God in the flesh. So how could people see Jesus if NO MAN can ever see God? That argument makes no sense when trying to prove that Jesus IS Almighty God Himself.
