TRUE BIBLICAL REPENTANCE
What does the word of God have to say about REPENTANCE ? What is TRUE BIBLICAL REPENTANCE ? To answer these extremely important questions let us go straight to the source, the Holy Bible, God's word.
Let's begin this study in God's word by reading Isaiah 30:15 from the New International Version or translation of the Bible, which says,
“This is what the Sovereign LORD, the Holy One of Israel, says: In REPENTANCE and rest is YOUR SALVATION, in quietness and trust is your strength, but you would have none of it.”
The very first thing that I want you to notice is that this is WHAT our SOVEREIGN LORD, the HOLY ONE of Israel is SAYING. These are the words from ALMIGHTY GOD HIMSELF speaking to us. This is NOT hearsay or the OPINIONS of Bible teachers. This verse of scripture is a THUS SAYS the LORD your GOD ! So we had better take heed when Almighty God himself tells us that our VERY OWN SALVATION is IN REPENTANCE !
So in other words, our VERY OWN SALVATION is dependent upon our REPENTANCE. Let me put this another way,
If there is NO TRUE REPENTANCE,
then there is NO TRUE SALVATION !
So then, we had better be absolutely sure what it means to have TRUE BIBLICAL REPENTANCE, AMEN.
For those of you who are not familiar with the word “AMEN” it simply means “AGREEMENT” or “I AGREE”. So when a preacher says, AMEN, he wants to hear his congregation or the audience to whom he is preaching to acknowledge to him that they are listening, understanding and that they are in AGREEMENT with what he is preaching or teaching. Therefore the crowd usually responds back with a hearty “AMEN”, or a “YES, AMEN”, which is simply saying, YES, I AGREE.
Now I am assuming that you are in agreement with me that it is vitally important to come to the knowledge and understanding of what TRUE BIBLICAL REPENTANCE means, since YOUR very OWN SALVATION depends upon TRUE REPENTANCE, otherwise I am reasonably sure that you would not even be here reading this study in God's word. So let us continue by reading this very same verse from a few other translations of the Bible, beginning with one of my favorite, the King James Version. So here is Isaiah 30:15 from the (KJV), which reads like this,
“For thus saith the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel; In RETURNING and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength: and ye would not.”
Now for those of you who do not like the old English style of writing let me translate this old English style writing for you in my own personal translation, as I have done in many of my other studies. You don't have to worry, I do NOT change the meaning of any verse whatsoever. I just merely change the word “YE” to “YOU”, the word “THUS” to THIS”, the word “SAITH” to “SAYS” or “HAS SAID” and so forth. So here is how Isaiah 30:15 reads from my own personal translation of the King James version of the Bible reads in my MIND as I read from this version or translation of God's word,
“For this says the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel; In RETURNING and rest YOU shall be SAVED; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength: and you would not.”
The thing that I want you to notice between the New International Version and the King James Version is that the word “REPENTANCE” in the New International Version is TRANSLATED as “RETURNING” in the King James Version. In fact almost every translation I have read TRANSLATES the original Hebrew word as RETURN or RETURNING. So then, is one translation more correct than the other? Perhaps in other verses, but in this instance BOTH are speaking the TRUTH. However, the word “REPENTANCE” may not be accurately understood by some, whereas the more simple word “RETURN” or “RETURNING” is much more less likely to be misunderstood. In other words, the word RETURN or RETURNING is less confusing, if you will, because for some the word "REPENTANCE" has somehow become to mean just merely saying that we are SORRY and then going right back and doing the same thing that we supposedly REPENTED of in the first place.
Now the word that is translated as RETURNING in the King James version is the Hebrew word “SUBA” and means RETURNING, that is to say, REPENTANCE. This Hebrew word “SUBA” is only used one time in the Bible, which is in Isaiah 30:15. So there is no way in which to compare scripture with scripture with this word “SUBA”. With that being said let's take a look at a couple more translations of this same verse of Scripture to see how some of the Bible scholars translated this Hebrew word “SUBA” in these other TRANSLATION.
Here is Isaiah 30:15 from New International Readers Version (NRIV), which is more of a PARAPHRASED translation. In other words, there is the ADDING of other words to the original text to try and make it more readily understood by the reader, which is sometimes good, but yet at other time it can be bad, because the adding of words can sometimes distort or even change the entire meaning of the original text. So take heed when reading from any PARAPHRASED version of the Holy Bible.
“The LORD and King is the Holy One of Israel. He says, "You will find PEACE and rest when you TURN AWAY from your sins and depend on me. You will receive the strength you need when you stay calm and trust in me. But you do not want to do what I tell you to.”
Now I really like the "TURN AWAY from YOUR SINS and DEPEND on me" part, which conveys the TRUE meaning of the word “REPENTANCE”. However, they left out the word SALVATION, or rather they replaced the word SALVATION or being SAVED with a less forceful word like PEACE. You see, this word peace does NOT give the full impact of what being SAVED truly means. Yes, peace is PART of what being saved means, but the word peace alone is by far NOT the TRUE meaning of SALVATION. This is why it is important to STUDY God's word and compare many translations and try to stay with the more strict word for word translations like the King James Version.
“This is what the Almighty LORD, the Holy One of Israel, says: You can be SAVED by RETURNING to me. You can have rest. You can be strong by being quiet and by trusting me. But you don't want that.”
Now from this translation one might possibly walk away with the WRONG impression or idea that YOU CAN be SAVED by the means of RETURNING to God, BUT that there MAY be OTHER WAYS of being SAVED other than REPENTING or more precisely RETURNING to God in order to be SAVED. Can you see what I am trying to say? The words "YOU CAN" are NOT forcefully demanding that IN RETURNING ALONE or IN REPENTANCE ALONE is the ONLY WAY to be SAVED.
Let's continue this study in God's word to find the meaning of TRUE BIBLICAL REPENTANCE by reading Isaiah 30:15 from the New Living Translation, which reads as follows,
“The Sovereign LORD, the Holy One of Israel, says,
ONLY in RETURNING to me and waiting for me will you be SAVED. In quietness and confidence is your strength. But you would have none of it.”
Now in this particular PARAPHRASED translation of this particular verse of scripture I like the way they added the word “ONLY”, which to me does not really change the true meaning of this verse from it's original text, but rather reinforces the TRUTH of the WHOLE word of God about the URGENCY of REPENTANCE or RETURNING to God's way, which is TURNING AWAY from our SINS and obeying the word of God to walk in RIGHTEOUSNESS. For you see, my dear brothers and sister's in the Lord, the TRUTH of the whole matter is that it is IN ONLY RETURNING to the WAY of God, which is OBEDIENCE to God's word to
WALK in RIGHTEOUSNESS ALWAYS!
Now Isaiah 30:15 is not the only place in the word of God that the word "REPENTANCE" is found. In fact, if you were one to just read from the King James Version ALONE, then this word repentance would NOT even be found in Isaiah 30:15. So the only way you could know that the word "RETURNING", which is found in the (KJV) as well as many other translation would be either to look the word RETURNING up in a concordance to find its' meaning in the ORIGINAL text, or compare scripture with scripture to find out what the word of God teaches us as a WHOLE. This is what I mean when I say, May God bless you richly as you continue to seek the TRUTH of the WHOLE word of God.
Now as we study the word of God we often time discover some things that are really rather interesting, well at least to me, I find it interesting. Here is one such thing that I find to be very interesting to me. The word “REPENT” in all its forms such as repentance, repented, repenteth, repentest, repenting, and repentings is found a total of 112 times in the King James Version of the Bible, which again I think is quite interesting; particularly if you have studied numbers in the Bible and their meanings. It is also interesting to note that this number system seems ONLY to work in the King James Version of the Bible. Please check out the study entitled, "THE AMAZING NUMBER 7"
You see the number 112 is equally divisible by SEVEN, where the number 7 is the number for perfection or being complete. Another way to write the number 112 is (7x16), where the number 16 is the number for love. In other words, the word REPENTANCE could be stated as (7) or perfect (X) or multiplied by (16) or love, that is to say, walking in repentance is walking in PERFECT LOVE, or walking in love completely. Or in other words,
WALKING in REPENTANCE
is equal to
WALKING IN PERFECT LOVE !
Please consider closely 1 John chapter 4, which reads,
3. And every spirit that confesses NOT that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is NOT of God: and THIS (the believing and confessing that Jesus did NOT come IN the FLESH) is that spirit of antichrist, whereof you have heard that it should come; and even now already is in the world.
So from this passage of scripture it is made clear that if we are walking in REPENTANCE, then we must without fail walk in LOVE one toward another. This is NOT a request or a mere suggestion, but rather this WALKING in REPENTANCE or WALKING in LOVE is a COMMANDMENT from Almighty God HIMSELF. Therefore we MUST WITHOUT FAIL LOVE one another even as he LOVED us and gave his life for us.
In other words,
If there is NO LOVE, then there is NO SALVATION !
Now the primary word that is translated as REPENT in the New Testament is the Greek word “METANOEO”, which means:
“Change of mind, repentance, the state of changing any or all of the elements composing one's life; attitude, thoughts, and behaviors concerning the demands of God for right living; note this state can refer to the foundational salvation event in Christ, or it can refer to the on going repentance in the Christian life.”
So in this definition of repentance we see that there is a point in time where there is an initial state of repentance, but we also see that there is an ONGOING or a CONTINUAL walking in repentance in the Christian life. In other words, repentance does NOT simply mean saying that we are sorry and then turning around and go back to doing the very thing which we repented of in the first place. If you are TRULY sorry, then there will be an obvious change in your behaviour.
The word of God COMMANDS us that men EVERYWHERE should REPENT.
Please read Acts 17:30, which plainly states,
The very heart of the message of the entire New Testament or the gospel begins with the message of a CALL to REPENTANCE.
Take a look at Matthew 3:1,2 which reads,
“In those days came John the Baptist, PREACHING in the wilderness of Judea, and saying, REPENT you: (why?) For (or because) the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
Then after Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist in water and was anointed with the Holy Spirit of Almighty God the Father, he was led into the wilderness by the Holy Spirit and was tempted of the devil for 40 days. Then after the temptation of Jesus we are told in Matthew 4:17 that Jesus himself began to PREACH REPENTANCE and that the kingdom of God is at hand.
Matthew 4:17 reads,
“From that time Jesus began to PREACH, and to say, REPENT: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
Mark 1:14,15 says it like this,
“Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, PREACHING the GOSPEL of the kingdom God, and saying, the time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: REPENT you and BELIEVE the GOSPEL.”
Then in Mark 6:12,13 we read were the 12 apostles went out PREACHING the GOSPEL of REPENTANCE, and where ever they preached the word of God they ALSO cast out devils and healed the sick, because this was PART of the WHOLE GOSPEL of Jesus Christ our Lord.
“And they (speaking of the 12 disciples of Jesus) went out, and PREACHED that men should REPENT.
And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them.”
Now in the gospel of Luke 13:3 we are told straight out to EITHER REPENT or PERISH !
Luke does NOT sugar coat the TRUE message of the GOSPEL in the least little bit. He tells us PLAINLY and CLEARLY to EITHER
REPENT or PERISH !
Do not just take my word for it, read it for yourself. Here is Luke 13:3 in black and white,
“I tell you, Nay: but, EXCEPT you REPENT, you shall all likewise PERISH.”
Then, in Luke 13:5, just two verses later, Jesus tells us the EXACT SAME THING.
“I tell you, Nay: but, EXCEPT you REPENT, you shall all likewise PERISH.”
Now, I would like you to please read Acts 3:19-21, which says,
“REPENT you therefore, and be CONVERTED, (why?) That your SINS may be blotted out, WHEN the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;
And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you:
Whom the heaven must receive UNTIL the times of restitution of all things, which God has spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.”
The first thing that I want you to notice that our SINS are NOT ACTUALLY or that is to say, our SINS are NOT PERMANENTLY BLOTTED OUT, UNTIL Jesus comes again to give to us our reward of ETERNAL LIFE. You see my dear brothers and sisters in the Lord, we do NOT ACTUALLY RECEIVE our reward of ETERNAL LIFE, UNTIL the WORLD that is to COME, speaking of the 1000 year reign of Jesus, WHEN Jesus shall rule in the kingdom of his God and Father here on the Earth for 1000 years. Please read and consider the gospel of Mark, chapter 10 and verses 29 and 30, which says,
"And Jesus answered and said, Verily (or truly) I say unto you, There is no man that has left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands for my sake, and the gospel's,
But he shall RECEIVE an hundredfold NOW in this TIME (or NOW in THIS LIFE), houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions, AND IN the WORLD to COME ETERNAL LIFE."
So you see my dear brothers and sisters in the Lord, the TRUTH of the WHOLE matter is that we are NOT ACTUALLY SAVED, that is to say, we do not actually RECEIVE or OBTAIN eternal life, UNTIL we have ENDURED unto the END. Now the words "ENDURE unto the END" mean that we MUST WITHOUT FAIL be found FAITHFUL and without spot or even the blemish of SIN in our lives when we DIE or when Jesus comes again to resurrect those who have died FAITHFUL in Jesus Christ and gather us ALL together so that we can forever be with our Lord. I explain this in some of my other studies in more detail, but for now let us continue in this study of God's word on TRUE BIBLICAL REPENTANCE by looking at the definition of the word CONVERTED.
The word "CONVERTED" here means to CHANGE or to TURN one's life. In other words the PROCESS of repentance is not only the initial turning away from our sins, but TRUE BIBLICAL REPENTANCE is also our continual walking in this new life of righteousness.
Please read 1 John 1:5-7 which says,
“This then IS the message (referring to the gospel) which we have heard of him, and declared unto you, that God is light, and in him (speaking of Almighty God the Father) is no darkness at all.
If we SAY we have fellowship with him (speaking of Jesus), and WALK in darkness, we LIE, and DO NOT the TRUTH:
But IF we walk in the light AS he (Jesus) is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son CLEANSES us from ALL SIN.”
So in other words if we just merely SAY we repent or simply SAY that we are sorry for sins and do not WALK in righteousness EVEN as Jesus is righteous, then we will NOT be cleansed from our sins.
Acts 26:20 says like this,
“... That they should REPENT and TURN to God, and do works MEET be for REPENTANCE. ”
The word that is translated as MEET here is the Greek word “AXIOS”, which means WORTHY, deserving, or corresponding to, that is to say, in keeping with. So in other words, after we repent, that is to say, after we TURN AWAY from our sins and turn to God then we must CONTINUE to WALK in this state of repentance by DOING good works or works of righteousness that are WORTHY, deserving or in keeping in line with REPENTANCE, which we did in the beginning or at the first.
Revelation 2:2-5 says it like this,
“I know your works, and your labor, and your patience, and how you cannot bear them which are evil: and you have tried them which say they are apostles, and are not and have found them liars:
And have born and have patience for my name's sake have labored, and have not fainted.
NEVERTHELESS I have somewhat against you, because you have LEFT your first love.
Remember therefore from whence you are FALLEN, and REPENT, and do the FIRST WORKS; or else I will come unto you quickly, and will remove your candlestick out of his place, EXCEPT you REPENT.”
Now I personally cannot speak for everyone else, but for me when I first accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior I had a deep sincere love to get sin out of my life and live a life that was holy and pleasing unto God. Please do not misunderstand what I am trying to say. I'm not dogmatically saying that the words "first love" mean without a doubt to be that "love and zeal to walk in righteousness and please God", which I had when I first accepted Jesus into my life, but for me that is what the words "first love" mean.
Revelation chapter 2, verse 16 goes on to say,
“Repent: or else I will come unto you quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.”
In other words, if we do not walk in continual repentance and keep sin out of our lives in order to be found blameless and spotless when Jesus comes again, then he will come upon us as a thief in the night and execute the wrath of Almighty God upon us.
Please read Revelation 3:1-6 where Jesus is talking to his CHURCH.
"And unto the angel of the CHURCH in Sardis write; These things says he that has the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know your WORKS, and you have a NAME that you LIVE, and are DEAD (In other words, some SAY that they are Christians, but their WORKS do NOT show that they of God).
Be WATCHFUL, and strenghten the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have NOT FOUND your WORKS PERFECT before God.
Remember therefore how you have RECEIVED and HEARD, and HOLD FAST, and REPENT. IF therefore you shall NOT WATCH, I will come ON YOU as a THIEF, and you will not know what hour I will come UPON YOU.
You have a FEW names in Sardis which have NOT DEFILED their garments (or have kept SIN OUT of their lives) and THEY (speaking of ONLY those FAITHFUL and OBEDIENT children of God who are keeping SIN OUT of their lives) shall walk with me in WHITE: (WHY?) for THEY are WORTHY.
He that OVERCOMES, the SAME (referring to ONLY those who OVERCOME SIN) shall be clothed in WHITE raiment; and I will NOT BLOT OUT his name OUT of the BOOK of LIFE, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels."
You see my dear brothers and sisters in the Lord, just because we accept Jesus as our Savior at one point or time in our life this does NOT automatically guarantee that we shall RECEIVE or OBTAIN eternal life, when Jesus comes again. We must without fail walk in righteousness. This is what Jesus means when he says I am the WAY, the truth, and the life no man comes unto the Father except by me.
Please read 1 John 3:2,3
“Beloved, now are we the sons of God and it does not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.
And EVERY MAN that has this hope in him PURIFIES HIMSELF, EVEN as he (speaking of Jesus) IS PURE.”
Possibly you may be thinking, “Now wait a minute there brother, Jesus is the ONLY ONE who ever lived his life without sin.”
And I say to you, yes, you're absolutely correct. Jesus is the only one who ever lived his ENTIRE life without sin, but this does not negate the clear biblical fact that we are all CALLED to live our lives EVEN as Jesus lived his life, WITHOUT SIN.
Please read 1 Peter 2:21-24
“For EVEN HEREUNTO were you CALLED: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an EXAMPLE; that you should FOLLOW HIS STEPS: (WHAT STEPS?)
Who did NO SIN, neither was guile found in his mouth:
Who when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered he threatened not, but committed himself to him that judges righteously:
Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, (why did Jesus bare our sins?) that we, being DEAD to sins, should LIVE unto RIGHTEOUSNESS: by whose stripes ye were healed.”
Ephesians 2:8-10 says it this way,
“For by grace are you saved through faith, and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Not of works, lest any man should boast.
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus UNTO GOOD WORKS, which God has before ordained that we should WALK in THEM (speaking of WALKING in good works of righteousness).”
You see my dear brothers and sisters in the Lord, the very reason that we are saved is to WALK in righteousness and to do good works. The Bible says that we are PREDESTINED to be CONFORMED to the IMAGE of his Son Jesus. In other words, the predetermined destination of those whose make the CHOICE to BELIEVE and OBEY the GOSPEL is to be conformed into the very image of our Lord and Savior Jesus the Christ.
Many Christians misunderstand completely what being SAVED truly means. The truth of the matter is that when we first accept Jesus as our personal Savior and repent of our sins, then we are cleansed from all our past sins which we have committed no matter what these sins may have been. This is what the word of God calls being reconciled unto God, which means that at the moment we REPENT and accept Jesus as our savior we are placed back into RIGHT RELATIONSHIP with Almighty God the Father.
Now if we were to die or Jesus would have come again at that point or moment in time of our life, then yes, we would be saved and we would be given eternal life, when Jesus comes again. However, if you're reading this study in God's word, then you did not die and Jesus did not come again as yet. Therefore you must CONTINUE to believe in the gospel and walk in OBEDIENCE to the word of God. This means that we must keep sin out of our lives without fail in order to OBTAIN eternal life, when Jesus comes again.
Please read Ezekiel 33:11-20 where God is seemingly pleading to every believer to go out and preach the gospel of repentance to every man. Also please remember Acts 17:25, which says,
“In the times of this ignorance God winked at, BUT NOW COMMANDS ALL MEN EVERYWHERE TO REPENT.”
Now read Ezekiel 33:11-30 where God is pleading with all men everywhere to REPENT and TO TURN from their wicked ways.
“11. Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked TURN from his way and live : turn you, turn you from your evil ways; for WHY will you die, O house of Israel?
12. Therefore, you son of man, say unto the children of your people, The righteousness of the righteous shall NOT deliver him in the day of his transgression (In other words, ALL the works of RIGHTEOUSNESS which we have done in the past will NOT do us ANY good when we turn from doing righteousness and commit SIN): as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall not fall thereby in the day that he TURNS from his wickedness; NEITHER shall the righteous (speaking of a true born again child of God) be able to LIVE for (or because of) his righteousness in the day that he SINS .
13. When I shall say to the righteous, that he shall surely live; if he trust to his own righteousness, and commit iniquity, ALL his righteousnesses shall NOT be remembered ; but for his iniquity that he has committed, he shall die for it.
Now I realize that to a believer who has been faithful all his or her life to follow the ways of our Lord and Savior and then if this believer were to be be deceived by the enemy with the deceitfulness of sin and return back to the lifestyle of sin from whence they were redeemed and should DIE while they are in the state of living in this wickedness of sin, then this it does not seem fair to them that all the righteousness which they have done all their life counts as nothing, but ONLY that last work of wickedness shall be remembered and that person shall be JUDGED by that last work, whether it be RIGHTEOUSNESS or WICKEDNESS.
In other words, for many believers it would seem to be more fair to at least consider the past works of righteousness of the believer to counter or to weigh in the balance of that one time that this believer fell into the snare of the enemy and gave into temptation to sin and just happened to DIE in that state of SIN.
I mean think about it, what if it were YOU who lived your whole life doing everything that you knew to do in order to live a life that was pleasing unto God, and then at the very end of your life the temptation SEEMED to you to become so great that you said in your heart, I can't do this anymore. And then you give into this temptation and sinned against God with the thought in your mind that after you fulfilled this pleasure of your lust that you would return back to God and repent. However, in the moment that you are living in this pleasure of your sin your life was taken from you by the enemy and you DIED in this sinful state. Would it be fair to YOU that you would be judged ONLY by your last work whether it be good or whether the evil?
Well to many of us it does not seem fair, but you have to remember that WE are NOT the judge. Ultimately it is God's word which will judge us. So then, either we are going to have to make the decision to choose to believe the WHOLE word of God or to reject all of God's word. We cannot simply pick and choose those scriptures which are pleasing to us.
Can you not see my dear brothers and sisters in the Lord, that this matter of living in TRUE BIBLICAL REPENTANCE is a matter of the utmost urgency and severity.
For you see,
If there are NO GOOD WORKS of righteousness,
then there is NO REWARD of eternal life!
But we know that God does not desire that any man should perish, but that all men every where should come to the knowledge of the truth to repent and to turn from their wicked ways so that they might live or obtain eternal life. God takes NO PLEASURE in the DEATH of the WICKED. God desires EVERY person to REPENT and to WALK in RIGHTEOUSNESS.
Please read 2 Peter 3:9 where we find what the WILL of God is for every human being on the Earth.
“The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is long-suffering to us ward (or the Lord is long suffering toward us), NOT WILLING that ANY should PERISH, but that ALL should come to REPENTANCE.”
Today is the day of salvation! God is calling men everywhere to repent and turn from their wicked ways in these last days, because Jesus is coming soon. The return of our Lord is imminent and is very near. The Kingdom of God is at hand. Time is running out! It is time for us to awake out of our sleep and preach the gospel of repentance. Today is the day of salvation!
Please read Hebrews 3:7 through Hebrews 4:1-2
So in other words, just hearing the gospel preached does NOT SAVE the person. The Bible teaches us that many are CALLED but few are chosen. This means that the one who is called to repentance by the gospel must without fail respond to the gospel in faith by accepting the word of God as the TRUTH and then OBEYING this message of salvation unto the end in order to obtain salvation, when Jesus comes again.
Please read Acts 11:14-18 which tells us that REPENTANCE LEADS us TO or TOWARDS eternal life.
“Who shall tell you WORDS, whereby you and all your house shall be SAVED.
And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning:
Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how he said, John indeed baptized with water; but you shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost.
For as much then as God gave them like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ: what was I, that I could withstand God?
When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, then has God also to the Gentiles granted repentance UNTO life.”
The phrase “repentance UNTO life” simply means that true biblical repentance will LEAD the believer UNTO eternal life. In other words, true biblical repentance will cause a believer to continue in his or her faith to endure unto the end in order to obtain eternal life, when Jesus comes again.
2 Corinthians 7:9-11 says it like this,
“Now I rejoice, not that you were made sorry, but that you sorrowed to REPENTANCE: for you were made sorry after a GODLY MANNER, that you might receive damage by us in nothing.
For GODLY SORROW works REPENTANCE TO SALVATION not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world works death.
For behold THIS SELFSAME THING (speaking of the godly sorrow that works REPENTANCE unto or towards salvation, that is to say, to the obtaining of eternal life), that you sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness IT (speaking of repentance or godly sorrow) wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what vehement desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge! In all things you have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter.”
So in other words, sincere godly sorrow works or causes us to walk in true biblical repentance, which is turning away COMPLETELY from wickedness and sin and LIVING a godly life in righteousness and DOING good works, which will lead us to be FOUND WORTHY to obtain salvation, that is to say, to obtain our REWARD of eternal life, when Jesus comes again, if so be that we endure unto the end.
You see, many Christians have been DECEIVED into believing that simply confessing Jesus as their Savior one time in their life automatically guarantees them eternal life when they die or when Jesus comes again. But the TRUTH of the matter is that a believer must without fail continue to believe and ENDURE unto the end in order to be saved.
Please read Matthew 24:9-13 where we will find Jesus speaking PRIVATELY to his disciples, his church.
“Then shall they deliver YOU up to be afflicted, and shall kill YOU: and YOU shall be hated of all nations for my namesake.
And then shall MANY (that is to say, many of YOU, speaking of his disciples, his church, which is the understood subject of this whole chapter) be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.
And many false prophets shall rise, and shall DECEIVE MANY (still speaking of many of YOU, that is to say, many of US, the church). And because iniquity shall abound, the LOVE of MANY shall wax cold.
But he (of YOU) that shall ENDURE unto the END, the SAME shall be SAVED.”
In other words, ONLY those of US, the church, who shall ENDURE unto the END shall be SAVED and obtain eternal life, when Jesus comes again.
Please read 2 Timothy chapter 2, which says,
19. Nevertheless the foundation of God stands sure, having this seal, The Lord knows them that are his. And, Let every one that names the name of Christ DEPART from iniquity. (In other words, if you CALL yourself a CHRISTIAN, then WALK in TRUE BIBLICAL REPENTANCE and get SIN out of your life)
21. If a man therefore purge himself from these (referring to those who SAY that they are Christians, but do NOT walk in RIGHTEOUSNESS), he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified , and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work.
It seems that sometimes that after we have become Christians, that is to say, after we have come to the knowledge of the truth and we have accepted Jesus as our Savior and begin living a life that is pleasing unto God by forsaking our sins and walking in righteousness that we begin to judge others in the world; forgetting that we ourselves were at one time where they are now.
So often it seems that a good well-meaning Christian becomes lax in their walk with the Lord and slowly fall back into the lifestyle which they once led.
Please read Romans 2:1-13
Now I realize my dear brothers and sisters in the Lord, that there will be times in our lives, particularly, when we are just beginning our walk with the Lord, that we will fall into the snare of the devil and give into the temptation and sin.
But we are assured in 1 John 1:9 that if we confess our sins, that is to say, if we REPENT of our sins, that God will forgive us of our sins and cleanse us of all our unrighteousness, which we have done.
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
In closing this study of God's word on true biblical repentance I want to leave you with the words from Hebrews 6:1 which says,
“Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, LET US GO ON UNTO PERFECTION; not laying again the foundation of REPENTANCE from dead works and faith toward God.”
In other words, what I am teaching in this study of God's word should ALREADY be written upon the heart of EVERY believer. And the focus should be on the teaching of HOW we are to WALK in TRUE BIBLICAL REPENTANCE.
The word of God commands us to be holy even as he is holy. The word of God also teaches us that we should be perfect even as our Father in heaven is perfect. 1 John 3:2,3 plainly tells us that if we have the HOPE of eternal life and being like Jesus when he comes again, then we will PURIFY ourselves EVEN as Jesus himself is PURE. The very word Christian implies that we are to be Christlike or as Christ Jesus is, so are we IN this PRESENT world.
Over and over throughout the word of God we are taught to follow Jesus, to be godly in this present world, to go and sin no more, to walk in love, to obey the commandments of God, to walk in righteousness, and to be careful to maintain good works of righteousness.
No true Biblical repentance,
then no obtaining of eternal life when Jesus comes again!
Luke 24:45-47 is a command to every believer to go into all world and preach the gospel of repentance to all of mankind.
“Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the Scriptures,
And said unto them, thus is it is written, and thus it behooved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the third day:
And that REPENTANCE and REMISSION of SINS should be PREACHED in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.”
In the gospel of John Jesus said unto Peter, do you LOVE me? Then Peter responded by saying, yes of course I love you Lord. Then Jesus responded back, then FEED my lambs. Jesus is saying to us, his church, if you LOVE me, then you will without fail FEED my sheep. In other words, PREACH this GOSPEL of REPENTANCE to ALL, for or because;
“This is what the Sovereign LORD, the Holy One of Israel, SAYS: In REPENTANCE and rest is YOUR SALVATION, in quietness and trust is your strength, but you would have none of it.”
Therefore if you desire to be SAVED and to RECEIVE eternal life, when Jesus comes again, then you MUST WITHOUT FAIL WALK in TRUE BIBLICAL REPENTANCE and TURN AWAY from walking in SIN.
Now we often think of the sheep as those who are already saved, but the word of God also teaches us about the LOST sheep. Jesus came to seek and to save that which is LOST. Therefore we must without fail be about our Father's business to seek and to save that which is lost.
Repent from preaching a watered down gospel.
Repent from being that salt which has lost its' savor and is good for nothing but to be cast on the ground trodden upon.
Repent from hiding your light under a bushel so that it could not shine to your fellow man.
Repent from your quenching of the Holy Spirit and for all the times that you used the excuse, well I do not want to be too bold for fear that I might drive some away from the Lord.
Repent for the kingdom of God is at hand!
Thanks for taking the time to read this studying God's word, go you now into all the world and preach the GOSPEL of true biblical repentance.
Your brother in Jesus Christ,
Now and forever,
