REALLY? Only NINE of the TEN Commandments?

      YES! I myself find ONLY NINE of the TEN COMMANDMENTS repeated in the NEW Testament. Here are the passages of scripture where the NINE commandments are repeated and we are taught to keep them.    

      However commandment #4 concerning the keeping of the Sabbath day I myself can not find repeated or taught anywhere in the NEW Testament. 

      YES, obviously Jesus who was born UNDER the LAW kept ALL the law and taught his disciples who were also UNDER the law at that time BEFORE Jesus actually died for their sins and ours. But AFTER the church began at the day of Pentecost I myself do NOT find the early church keeping the Sabbath day. 

      YES, the Apostles went into the synagogues on the Sabbath day, but the REASON they did go into the Synagogue on the Sabbath day was to PREACH the GOSPEL of our Lord Jesus Christ. We can read over and over where Paul DISPUTED and PERSUADED the JEWS in the Synagogue on the Sabbath day and in the market, and daily in the temple, but in none of the verses are we clearly and plainly told that Paul was OBSERVING the SABBATH of the JEWS we he went into the Synagogue on the Sabbath day. We will talk more on this later on in this study of God's word, but for now let us take a look at the passages of scripture that REPEAT the other NINE commandments of God.

     Please keep in mind that there are some times many more verses that may teach a particular commandment, but it is only needful to show two or three for us to that these NINE commandment are not only repeated in the New Testament, but also that we as Christians are taught to KEEP these NINE commandments. Again we will look more closely at the FOURTH commandment a little later in this study.

         Commandment # 1.

      (1Corinthians 8:4-6 & Acts 14:15)

      Exodus 20:1-3

    "And God spoke all these words, saying,

    2. I am the LORD your God, which have brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

    3. You shall have no other gods before me."

    Now WHAT commandments are REPEATED for us as Christians in the NEW Testament under the NEW COVENANT?:


     Commandment #1 under the NEW covenant.

     1 Corinthians 8:4-6

   "As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one.

    5. For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,)

    6. But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him."

     Acts 14:15.

    "And saying, Sirs, why do you these things? We also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that you should turn from these vanities unto the living God, which made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein:"

         Commandment # 2.

     (Galatians. 5:18-21, Romans. 1:22,23, & 1 John 5:21)

     Exodus 20:4-6

   "4. You shall not make unto you any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:

    5. You shall not bow down yourself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

    6. And showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments."

      Now REPEATED for us as Christians in the NEW Testament:

      Commandment #2 under the NEW covenant.

      Galatians 5:18-21

    "But if you be led of the Spirit, you are not under the law.

    19. Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

    20. Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, sedition, heresies,

    21. Envying, murders, drunkenness, revellings (partying with drunkenness and or sex), and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God."

      Romans 1:21-23

    "Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

    22. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

    23. And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and four footed beasts, and creeping things."

      1 John 5:21

    "Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen."

          Commandment # 3.

       (James 5:12)

       Exodus 20:7

     "7. You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that takes his name in vain."

        Now REPEATED for us as Christians in the NEW Testament:

       Commandment #3 under the NEW covenant.

       James 5:12

     "But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest you fall into condemnation."

          Commandment # 4.

       (NOT FOUND repeated or taught in the NEW TESTAMENT)

       Exodus 20:8-11

     "8. Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

     9. Six days shall you labor, and do all your work:

     10. But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD your God: in it you shall not do any work, you, nor your son, nor your daughter, your manservant, nor your maidservant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger that is within your gates:

     11. For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and RESTED the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it."

     Again I myself could not find anywhere in the NEW Testament where the early church either kept the Sabbath or taught us to keep the Sabbath. And again we will look more closely at this fourth commandment later on in this study of God's word.

    Commandment # 5.

     (Ephesians 6:1-3)

     Exodus 20:12

    "12. Honor your father and your mother: that your days may be long upon the land which the LORD your God gives you."

      Now REPEATED for us as Christians in the NEW Testament:

      Commandment #5 under the NEW covenant.

      Ephesians 6:1-3

    "Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.

     2. Honor your father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;)

     3. That it may be well with you, and you may live long on the earth."

         Commandment # 6.

      (Romans 13:8-10)

    "13. You shall not kill."

       Now REPEATED for us as Christians in the NEW Testament:

       Commandment #6 under the NEW covenant.

     "Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loves another has fulfilled the law.

     9. For this, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not kill, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness, You shall not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

     10. Love works no ill to his neighbor: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law."

          Commandment # 7.

     "9. Know you not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,

     10. Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God."

          Commandment # 8.

       ( Romans 13:8-10 and Ephesians 4:28)

       Exodus 20:15

     "15. You shall not steal."

       Now REPEATED for us as Christians in the NEW Testament:

       Commandment #8 under the NEW covenant.

     "28. Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labor, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needs."

     "16. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor."

        Now REPEATED for us as Christians in the NEW Testament:

       Commandment #9 under the NEW covenant.

       Revelation 21:7,8

     "7. He that overcomes shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.

     8. But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whore mongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone: which is the second death."

       Revelation 22:14,15

     "14. Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

     15. For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whore mongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loves and makes a lie."

          Commandment # 10.

       (Romans 13:8-10 and Ephesians 5:3)

       Exodus 20:17

     "17. You shall not covet your neighbor's house, you shall not covet you neighbor's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is your neighbor's."

       Now REPEATED for us as Christians in the NEW Testament:

       Commandment #10 under the NEW covenant.

       Romans 13:8-10

     "Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loves another has fulfilled the law.

     9. For this, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not kill, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness, You shall not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

       Ephesians 5:1-7

     "1. Be you therefore followers of God, as dear children;

     2. And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us, and has given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet smelling savor.

     3. But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becomes saints;

     4. Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.

     5. For this you know, that no whore monger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

     6. Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things comes the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.

     7. Be not you therefore partakers with them."

       Now let us take a CLOSER look at the FOURTH commandment that as I said before I myself do NOT find this COMMAND to KEEP the Sabbath day REPEATED or taught in the NEW TESTAMENT to us as Christians to OBSERVE or KEEP the Sabbath day in the manner that it was taught in the OLD Testament UNDER the FIRST covenant to be observed.

     The English word "SABBATH" is found 55 times in the King James Bible in the NEW Testament. Of these 55 times 45 of which are found in the four Gospels and the remaining 10 times are found 9 times in the book of Acts and 1 time in Colossians 2:16. 

      Here is a list of the ONLY nine times the word "SABBATH" is found in the book of the ACTS of the Apostles. Please read them checking the CONTEXT as well and judge for yourself as to whether or not these passages of scripture CLEARLY and PLAINLY can be interpreted in such a way as to DOGMATICALLY teach that we as Christians are to KEEP this fourth commandment in the same manner as God's peoples Israel were commanded to OBSERVE it under the OLD Testament law of Moses. 

      YES, once again I fully understand that you will obviously see Paul going into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, but you will also see that the REASON that he did so was to PREACH the GOSPEL of Jesus Christ. 

      A NON Saturday seventh day of the week Sabbath keeping Christians may go into a Saturday Sabbath keeping church to visit or witness, but this does NOT mean that they are Saturday seventh day of the week Sabbath keeping Christians. Or today a Christian may be seen going into a bar to share to gospel or just to have a bite to eat with some non Christians friends, but this does NOT PROVE beyond any shadow of a doubt to dogmatically say that they were going into that bar as others were to drink alcohol and get drunk.  

      So as you read through these following passages of scripture I ask that you keep an open mind and heart laying aside any preconceived teachings that you may have been taught and let the Holy Spirit lead and guide you into all truth.

      Acts 1:12.

    "Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a Sabbath day's journey."

     To me this is just a reference to the distance from Jerusalem to the mount of Olives. Obviously the Jews of that day understood what this meant because they had been taught the law of Moses from a young age. The question is does this passage of scripture PROVE beyond any shadow of a doubt that Christians are to KEEP the Sabbath day? You be the the judge.

       Acts 13:14.

     "But when they departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia, and went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and sat down."

      This one for sure you will want to read the CONTEXT some of which are in the verses that follow. All I ask is that you lay aside any previous teaching that you may have been taught and read these verse with you spiritual eyes open and judge for yourself with the leading of the Holy Spirit. Ask yourself the question of WHY Paul and those with Paul went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day and sat down?

       Acts 13:27.

     "For they that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor yet the voices of the prophets which are read every Sabbath day, they have fulfilled them in condemning him."

      Here in this passage of scripture you can see Paul standing up after the rulers of the synagogue read the scriptures and asked Paul and his company if they had anything to say. Paul they began to open up the eyes of their understanding explaining the scriptures were pointing to Jesus the promised MESSIAH. To ME, this is the REASON WHY Paul and the believers that were with him went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day and st down. 

       They were simply waiting for the scriptures to be read as was the custom so that they could EXPLAIN to the JEWS that the scriptures POINTED to Jesus. In other words, the REASON they went into the Synagogue on the Sabbath day was NOT to OBSERVE the Sabbath say as the JEWS, but rather they went into a place were they knew that the JEWS would be assembled together so that they could PREACH the GOSPEL of Jesus Christ to the JEWS first as the Lord had taught them. 

       Acts 13:42.

     "And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next Sabbath."

      Here we see that the Gentiles who obviously over heard Paul preaching about a MESSIAH or a SAVIOR caused them to sit up and LISTEN. To me it is obvious that these Gentiles wanted to hear MORE about this Jesus and they obviously knew that the JEWS meet every Saturday to talk about God so they made an APPOINTMENT with Paul to meet back here at the same time and the same place to tell them MORE about JESUS. 

       It was NOT the custom of the GENTILES to keep the Sabbath day, but from over verses in the Bible the women and the children as well as the GENTILE were outside the synagogue itself, but could obviously HEAR what was being said on the inside of the Synagogue. This verse says that when the JEWS had gone OUT of the synagogue meaning that their custom of reading the scripture was over or had ended and the JEWS were leaving because they were REJECTING what Paul was PREACHING inside of the Synagogue. 

       But the GENTILES having overheard Paul's PREACHING wanted to hear more so they asked Paul if they could hear more on the next DAY that he was going to PREACH, which happened to be on the Sabbath day because this was the DAY that the JEWS gathered together in ONE PLACE.

      Acts 13:44.

    "And the next Sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God."

     Now was this WORD of God that they came to HEAR about the LAW of Moses to KEEP the law of Moses? OR was this WORD of God that they came to HEAR again where the week before some of these Gentiles had made and APPOINTMENT with PAUL to hear what he had to teach about this man named JESUS who the Jews crucified. WHAT was this GOSPEL all about that caused nearly the WHOLE city to come out and HEAR on this Sabbath day? Was this PREACHING of Paul about the KEEPING of the LAW or was Paul EXPLAINING the Moses and the Old Testament prophets as POINTING To JESUS?

      Acts 15:21.

    "For Moses of old time has in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every Sabbath day."

     The apostle James is speaking here in regard to settling a DISPUTE between believers over whether or not they should continue in the law of Moses to CIRCUMCISE the Gentile believers in the FLESH as the law of God taught. Some were saying yes while others were saying no. Please keep in mind that there was much heavy persecution against the church by the JEWS that in most every city preached Moses by reading in the synagogues every Sabbath day. 

       Also please keep in mind that the church was still yet receiving REVELATION KNOWLEDGE from the Holy Spirit. Just a few chapter before it was UNKNOWN or not completely UNDERSTOOD that God has also cleansed the GENTILES by the blood of Jesus as well on the cross as he did for the JEWS. But then God gave Peter a VISION in Acts chapter 10 REVEALING to Peter that some CHANGES in the OLD COVENANT were made at the cross of Jesus and now the TIME had come to take the GOSPEL to the GENTILES. 

       Please read all the studies that I have written on this subject of whether or not we as Christians are to KEEP ALL the law contained in some 613 carnal ordinances written in the OLD Testament to God's people ISRAEL. I will post a list of links to these studies at the end of this study for you to search out the TRUTH for yourself from the WHOLE word of God laying aside as best you can any other teaching you may have received. 

              Acts 16:13.

    "And on the Sabbath we went out of the city by a river side, where prayer was wont to be made; and we sat down, and spoke unto the women which resorted there."

     This verse makes it clear that the early church did not ALWAYS preach the gospel IN the synagogue. It may be that earlier that Sabbath day they went into the synagogue to preach the gospel as well, but my point is that the NEW Testament did NOT teach us as Christians to OBSERVE the Sabbath day in the SAME MANNER as the JEWS were taught to keep the Sabbath day as spelled out by the letter of the law of Moses? Again please keep in mind that the early Church is still learning from the Holy Spirit as what to do and as what not do and what to teach.

       Acts 17:2.

     "And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three Sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,"

     Now some can INTERPRET the words, :as was his MANNER" as it was the CUSTOM of Paul to OBSERVE the Sabbath day. But to ME, it is clear that these words. " as his manner was" is simply speaking of Paul's manner AFTER Paul became a Christian. 

      You see dear child of God, the manner of Paul was to go into the synagogue on the Sabbath to PREACH the GOSPEL of Jesus to the JEWS. In the CONTEXT of this verse we can clearly see that Paul is REASONING with the JEWS out of the Old Testament scripture about JESUS. To ME, this is the ONLY REASON of WHY the early church went into the synagogues of the Sabbath day. The calling of the church is to PREACH the GOSPEL of Jesus Christ. CLEARLY to me, this is what the church was doing when they went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day. You must judge for YOURSELF.

       Acts 18:4.

     "And he reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks."

      Again over and over we see that the REASON that Paul and the early church went into the synagogues on the Sabbath day was to PREACH the GOSPEL and PERSUADE the Jews and the Gentiles to BELIEVE in JESUS as the MESSIAH.

     So then, in none of these passages of scripture do I myself find where we as Christians are commanded or even taught to keep the Sabbath day. Yes, again the Apostles went into synagogue on the Sabbath day, but the REASON that they went into the synagogues was to PREACH the gospel to the Jews.

     In Acts 16:13 we see the disciple going OUT of the city down by a river on the Sabbath day to preach the gospel to a group of women that were gathered together there perhaps to pray. For a deeper understanding on whether or not we as Christians should keep the Sabbath, as in, worshiping God on SATURDAY as opposed to worshiping God on Sunday please read the studies called "SABBATH KEEPING VERSUS SUNDAY WORSHIP?" and "ACTS 10 PETER'S VISION OF CLEANSED MEATS?".

     But for now lets us take a look at Colossians 2:16,17, which teaches us that we are not to let others judge or condemn us for not keeping the Sabbath day.

     Colossians 2:16.17.

    "Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holy day, or of the new moon, or of the Sabbath days:

    17. Which are a SHADOW of things to come; BUT the body is OF Christ."

     So then, here is a list of things Paul is teaching us as Christians to not let any man JUDGE us: 

     1. Let no man judge you in MEAT referring to food as in what you eat.

     2. Let no man judge you in DRINK.

     3. Let no man judge you in respect of an HOLY DAY referring to a YEARLY high holy Sabbath day.

     4. Let no man judge you in respect of the NEW MOON speaking of the MONTHLY Sabbath days.

     5. Let no man judge you in respect of the SABBATH DAYS speaking of the WEEKLY SABBATH days.

     I want you to read Colossians 2:16,17 from several other translations, which make it blatantly clear that we as Christians are NOT to let any man CONDEMN us for NOT observing the annual feast days, for NOT keeping the monthly festivals and for NOT honoring the weekly Sabbath days.

     Here is Col. 2:1,17 from the New International Version (NIV)

   "Therefore do NOT let anyone judge you by what you EAT or DRINK, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a SABBATH DAY.

   17. These are a SHADOW of the things that were to come; the reality (or the TRUE), however, is found IN Christ."

     Col. 2:16,17 from the Complete Jerusalem Bible (CJB)

   "So don't let anyone PASS judgment on you in connection with eating and drinking, or in regard to a Jewish festival or Rosh-Hodesh or Shabbat.

   17. These are a SHADOW of things that are coming, but the body is OF the MESSIAH."

     Col. 2:16,17,18 from the New Living Translation (NLT)

   "So don't let anyone CONDEMN you for what you eat or drink, or for NOT celebrating certain holy days or new-moon ceremonies or Sabbaths.

   17. For these rules were only shadows of the REAL thing, Christ himself.

   18. Don't let anyone condemn you by INSISTING on self-denial. And don't let anyone say you must worship angels, even though they say they have had visions about this. These people claim to be so humble, but their sinful minds have made them PROUD."

     Col.2:16,17 from the Message Bible

   "So don't put up with anyone pressuring you in DETAILS of DIET, worship services, or holy days.

   17. All those things are mere shadows cast before what was to come; the substance is Christ."

     Col.2:16-23 from the New Century Version (NCV)

   "So do NOT let anyone make RULES for you about eating and drinking or about a religious feast (referring to NOT keeping of the annual feast days), a New Moon Festival (the MONTHLY celebrations), or a Sabbath day (Speaking of NOT keeping the WEEKLY Sabbath day).

   17. These things were like a SHADOW of what was to come. But what is TRUE and real HAS COME and is found IN Christ.

   18. Do not let anyone disqualify you by making you humiliate yourself and worship angels (speaking of the DOCTRINES of Devils). Such people enter into visions, which fill them with foolish pride because of their human way of thinking. (to ME this sounds almost like a PROPHECY of the coming of the Seventh Day Advent church where the founder and leader has visions falsely teaching here to makes rules for Christians about eating and keeping the feast days and the Sabbath days. This passage of scripture is WARNING the church of false teachers that wound come into the church to try and Judanize believers to keep all the law of Moses as the JEWS.)

   19. They do not hold tightly to Christ, the head. It is from him that all the parts of the body are cared for and held together. So it grows in the way God wants it to grow.

   20. Since you died with Christ and were made free from the ruling spirits of the world, WHY do you act as if you still belong to this world by following rules like these:

   21. "Don't eat this," "Don't taste that," "Don't even touch that thing"?

   22. These rules refer to earthly things that are gone as soon as they are used. They are only man-made commands and teachings.

   23. They seem to be wise, but they are only part of a man-made religion. They make people pretend not to be proud and make them punish their bodies, but they do not really control the evil desires of the sinful self."

     Col. 2:16,17 from God's Word Translation (GWT)

   "Therefore, let no one judge you because of what you EAT or drink OR about the observance of ANNUAL holy days, New Moon Festivals (MONTHLY feasts), or WEEKLY worship days.

   17. These are a shadow of the things to come, but the body [that casts the shadow] belongs to Christ."

     You can continue to read from many more multiple translations and they all speak the SAME thing. Again I encourage you to read the study called "SABBATH KEEPERS VERSES SUNDAY WORSHIP?" for a deeper understanding that the early church assembled themselves together on SUNDAY, the LORD'S DAY to worship God. 

     Here are few quotes from some very early first and second century early church writers that clearly teach us that the early church worshiped God on SUNDAY the FIRST day of the week, which they wrote as being the EIGHTH day, the day AFTER the 7th day. or the day AFTER the Sabbath and the Lord's day, the day our Lord rose from the grave.

Barnabas (+/- 100), Epistle, Chapter 15
"Wherefore, also, we keep the 8th day with joyfulness, the day also on which Jesus rose again from the dead."

Justin Martyr (110-165)
Apology, Chapter 67 - "And on that day called Sunday, all who live in cities or in the country gather together to one place. ... Sunday is the day on which we all hold our common assembly, because it is the first day on which God, having wrought a change in the darkness and matter, made the world; and Jesus Christ our Saviour on the same day rose from the dead."
In the Dialogue of Justin Martyr with Trypho the Jew, Trypho writes: "But this is what we are most at a loss about: that you, professing to be pious, and supposing yourselves better than others, are not in any particular separated from them, and do not alter your mode of living from the nations, in that you observe no festivals or sabbaths, and do not have the rite of circumcision" (Chapter 10).
To this Justin replies: "The new law requires you to keep perpetual sabbath, and you, because you are idle for one day, suppose you are pious, not discerning why this has been commanded you" (Chapter 12).

Tertullian (145-220)
Against Marcian, Book 5, Chapter 19, verses 16,17.
"Now tell me, Marcian, what is your opinion of the apostle's language, when he says, 'Let no man judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of a holy day, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath, which is a shadow of things to come, but the body is of Christ.' We do not now treat the law, further than (to remark) that the apostle here teaches clearly how it has been abolished, even by passing from shadow to substance -- that is, from figurative types to the reality, which is Christ."

Bardesanes (154-227)
"And what shall we say of the new race of us Christians, whom Christ at His advent planted in every country and in every region? for, lo! wherever we are, we are all called after the one name of Christ -- Christians. On one day, the first of the week, we assemble ourselves together."

Ignatius wrote in the early 100's A.D., describing Christians with a Jewish background as those who “have come to the possession of a new hope, no longer observing the Sabbath, but living in observance of the Lord's Day, on which also our life has sprung up again by Him and by His death” (Magnesians 9 ) [Editor's note: Magnesians is a letter written to the church at Magnesia by Ignatius, a church father, also called Theophorus.]

      Also I might add that many Sabbath keepers FALSELY teach that it is a SIN to worship God of SUNDAY. Some Sabbath keepers even go so far as to FALSELY teach that Christians who worship God on SUNDAYS are taking the MARK of the BEAST.

      If either of these were true, then surely Almighty God would not answer the prayers of these so called SINNERS to HEAL the SICK on SUNDAY. But I am hear to ASSURE you my dear brothers and sisters in our Lord Jesus Christ that I have personally witnessed Almighty God answering the prayers of many believers on SUNDAY to heal the sick and also to be FILLED with the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues as the Holy Spirit gave them utterance. So it is NOT a SIN to worship God on SUNDAY or any other day of they week. 

      The new testament first century early church at least in the very beginning met DAILY to share the things that God was doing among them. The early church gathered together on SUNDAY to partake of communion. Paul preached on SUNDAY. 

      Paul also as I said before went into the synagogues on Saturday to preach the GOSPEL to the JEWS who were observing the Sabbath day, but this does not mean that Paul himself was observing the Sabbath day. Paul himself said that he became a JEW in order that he might win the Jew to Jesus Christ. So the REASON that Paul went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day was to PREACH the GOSPEL of Jesus Christ.

      You see my dear brothers and sisters in our Lord Jesus Christ, what the early church decided in Acts chapter 15 was to not place any burdens upon these new Gentile Christians other than these FOUR things, which were to abstain from meat or food that was known to be offered to idols, to abstain from eating raw uncooked meat that still had blood in it, to abstain from things strangled, and to abstain from fornication.

      The whole purpose of placing just a minimal restriction upon new believers is to help them depend upon the leading of the Holy Spirit more so than following a list of rules and regulations that are written down on paper. In other words, God is doing a NEW thing among his people. God wants to lead his people by his Holy Spirit. God want to write his word upon our hearts. God has done away with the OLD covenant and has mad a NEW covenant in the shed blood of his Son Jesus.

      Also keep in mind that these were GENTILE Christians where some may have indeed worshiped IDOLS and false gods. So then, while the JEW who became a Christian already knew that there is but ONE God some of these Gentile Christians may not of had this knowledge. And the first two commandment are focused on worshiping the one true God and having no other gods before him, so it seemed reasonably to the Apostles and to the Holy Spirit to make this decree to at least have these commandment not to eat meat that is offered to IDOLS.

      Again to ME there is no doubt that NINE of the TEN commandment were indeed REPEATED and taught in the NEW TESTAMENT to be KEPT by Christians. And again I myself, have found ONLY nine of the original ten commandments to be REPEATED and clearly taught in the NEW Testament to be KEPT by Christians. In other words, I myself have not found anywhere in the NEW TESTAMENT where we as Christians are commanded to keep the FOURTH commandment in the manner in which the Sabbath day is commanded to be kept UNDER the LAW given to the children of ISRAEL in the OLD Testament and a TYPE and a SHADOW of the coming MESSIAH who is our REST. 

      Work out you OWN salvation with God with fear and trembling keeping in mind the WHOLE word of God. If you seek to be justified by the law you must keep the WHOLE law. The Bible says that a LITTLE LEAVEN will leaven the WHOLE lump. 

       If you are a NEW Sabbath keeper beware that the next bondage that Sabbath keepers will place upon you is the DIETARY laws of the Testament. They will at first simply suggest that it is best for HEALTH reason to keep the dietary laws, but later on you will be looked down upon and even shunned if you break the dietary laws. Then it will be how you dress. And then it will be your money. And then they will heap condemnation upon you and your family if you try to leave their church. Sabbath keeping churches have NO trust in the Holy Spirit to lead and guide you into all truth. THEY want to CONTROL every thing you read, hear and watch.

       You see, if you take a closer look at the DOCTRINES of the SABBATH KEEPING groups you will see that they all started with just going to church on SATURDAY rather than SUNDAY like most Christians. And then over time that little leaven began to ADD more and more of the OLD Testament law of Moses contained in some 613 carnal ordinances to the point that SOME Sabbath keeping churches are even considering to start observing the law pertaining to offering of SACRIFICES. 

       It just recently came to my attention that some in the 119 Ministries and some other groups of the Hebrew Roots Movement are teaching that Christians should be CIRCUMCISED in the FLESH as an OUTWARD showing of your INWARD circumcision of the HEART made without hands by Almighty God. They use water baptism as an analogy to DECEIVE their followers to be CIRCUMCISED in the FLESH, which is TOTALLY against what is taught in the NEW Testament.

       You see, A LITTLE LEAVEN, or a LITTLE FALSE TEACHING will lead to even MORE and MORE FALSE TEACHING. So judge with fear and tremble with the leading of the Holy Spirit as to whether or not we as Christians are to DOGMATICALLY observe the SABBATH day in order to be saved and to receive eternal life in the world to come. 

      And you yourself must decide for yourself IF the Sabbath day command to ISRAEL under the OLD covenant was NOT a shadow of that which was to come as being our REST we have in Jesus Christ and in fact has NOT been ABOLISHED at the cross.

      If so be that you DO decide that the Sabbath day was NOT a shadow of the coming Messiah, THEN you must ALSO AGREE that NEITHER has the MANNER or the WAY that the Sabbath is OBSERVED has changed or abolished.

      In other words, IF you the reader, are a Sabbath keeper, then are you in fact truly keeping the Sabbath to the LETTER of the LAW as written in the OLD Testament? OR are you just attending a Bible study on SATURDAY so that it appears that you are keeping the Sabbath day?

      I know from personal experience that the Catholic church used to teach that it was a MORTAL sin to miss church on SUNDAY. A MORTAL sin for those who may not know is a sin that leads a Christians straight to hell with no chance of purgatory, which is another false teaching of the Catholic church. And that missing church on Sunday being a MORTAL SIN was ONE dogmatic doctrine of mandatory going to church every Sunday along with the false doctrine of forever being TORMENTED in the flames of fire if you missed just ONE Sunday going to church that drove me AWAY from God even to the point of believing that that was NO God. You can read my testimony for more detail how God brought me through all of this DARKNESS to a place where I cried out to God asking him to teach me the TRUTH, the WHOLE TRUTH and NOTHING but the TRUTH.

      But for now I just want to point out to you the reader, that I myself have not found anywhere in the NEW Testament where the early church COMMANDED believers to assemble themselves together on a SPECIFIC day whether it be on a Saturday, or whether if be on a Sunday, or whether it be on any ONE day, or even if it be on a WEEKLY basis. The only thing that we are instructed to do is to forsake NOT the assembling of ourselves together as the manner of SOME. 

       Please read Hebrews 10:15-25.

    "Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a WITNESS to us: for after that he had said before,

    16. This is the COVENANT that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord, I will put my laws into their HEARTS, and in their minds will I write them;

    17. And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.

    18. Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.

    19. Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,

    20. By a NEW and living way, which he has consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;

    21. And having an high priest over the house of God;

    22. Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

    23. Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised ;)

    24. And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:

    25. Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as you see the day approaching."

      You cannot exhort one another if you never assemble TOGETHER or communicate with fellow believers. But please notice that NO particular DAY and NO particular TIME and no particular SCHEDULE, as is, being DAILY, WEEKLY, MONTHLY or YEARLY was ever commanded or even suggested that we assemble ourselves together on a FIXED day of the week at a fixed time. 

      All we know for SURE and all we have to go on is the pattern that we see in the early church and in the NEW Testament of the Bible. What did the early church do? What I myself have found is that on things pertaining to ONLY the Church, such as Communion and collecting money for the needy, the church assembled together on SUNDAY, the FIRST day of the week. Please read the studies called "SABBATH KEEPERS VERSUS SUNDAY WORSHIP?" and "ACTS 10 PETER'S VISION F CLEANSED MEATS?" for an in depth study in God words that to me clearly shows us that the early church met on SUNDAY as opposed to Saturday.

       I myself as also with many other Christians have always assembled with other believers on Sunday and never once have I EVER been convicted by the Holy Spirit that it is a SIN or that it is the WRONG day for us as Christians to worship God. You would think that at least that the Holy Spirit would KNOW if Sunday was a SIN or the WRONG day of the week to worship Almighty God. 

      But again Almighty God does not hear and answer the prayer of SINNERS and yet on SUNDAY when we meet to worship God there is often a call to pray for the sick and through the years I have personally prayed for and have witnessed many hundreds of people being HEALED on SUNDAY.

      So without a doubt I can assure you my dear brothers and sisters in our Lord Jesus Christ that it is NOT a SIN to worship God on SUNDAY as some FALSELY teach in order to COMPEL you to worship God ONLY on SATURDAY trying to heap condemnation upon you saying that you are NOT KEEPING the COMMANDMENTS of God if you do NOT KEEP the SABBATH day dogmatically demanding that the Sabbath can ONLY be kept on a SATURDAY, the SEVENTH day of the week.

      I recently ask myself the question, Is there anywhere in the Old Testament that foretold of a NEW day to worship God and the Holy Spirit led me to Leviticus 23 where we are told about the FEAST days of the Lord.             Let us read Leviticus 23:1-16,

    "And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying,

    2. Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, CONCERNING the FEASTS of the LORD, which you shall proclaim to be holy convocations, even THESE are my FEASTS.

    3. Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the Sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; you shall do no work therein: it is the Sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings.(notice that the FOURTH COMMANDMENT is called a FEAST day of the Lord, then Moses proclaims the other FEAST days of the Lord)

    4. THESE are the FEASTS of the LORD, even holy convocations, which you shall proclaim in their seasons.

    5. In the fourteenth day of the first month at even is the LORD'S Passover.

    6. And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the feast of unleavened bread unto the LORD: seven days you must eat unleavened bread.

    7. In the first day you shall have an holy convocation: you shall do no servile work therein.

    8. But you shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD seven days: in the seventh day is an holy convocation: you shall do no servile work therein.

    9.  And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying,

    10. Speak  unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When you be come into the land which I give unto you, and shall reap the harvest thereof, then you shall bring a sheaf of the first fruits of your harvest unto the priest:

    11. And he shall wave the sheaf before the LORD, to be accepted for you: on the MORROW AFTER the Sabbath the priest shall wave it.

    12. And you shall offer that day when you wave the sheaf an he lamb without blemish of the first year for a burnt offering unto the LORD.

    13. And the meat offering thereof shall be two tenth deals of fine flour mingled with oil, an offering made by fire unto the LORD for a sweet savor: and the drink offering thereof shall be of wine, the fourth part of an hin.

    14. And you shall eat neither bread, nor parched corn, nor green ears, until the selfsame day that you have brought an offering unto your God: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations in all your dwellings.

    15. And you shall count unto you from the MORROW AFTER the Sabbath, from the day that you brought the sheaf of the wave offering; seven Sabbaths shall be complete:

    16. Even unto the MORROW AFTER the SEVENTH Sabbath shall you number FIFTY days; and you shall offer a NEW meat offering unto the LORD."

    This NEW offering to the Lord takes places on the day of PENTECOST the FIRST day of the week, which is when the CHURCH BEGAN.

      Please read the following studies listed below that clearly show the dangers of how a LITTLE false teaching will eventually lead to many more FALSE teachings.

      Also below are some quotes from early church writers which clearly teach us that the early church did NOT keep the seventh day of the week as the Jews.

This study was just the TIP of the iceberg of exposing the ERRORS of interpretation made by the Saturday seventh day of the week Sabbath keeping churches, and the Sunday first day of the week Sabbath keeping Christians.

Some CLAIM the the early church kept the Sabbath as the Jews, but I assure you that the early first century church were accustomed to gathering together BEFORE the light of day break on the FIRST day of the week that THEY called the Lord's day.

Here is a NON BIAS historical account found in a letter from Pliny the Younger to Trojan concerning the Christians.

Pliny was a Roman who persecuted and killed Christians, so again this is a historical NON BIAS account of WHEN Christians gathered together.

Here is what Pliny says in his letter to Trajan. The EMPHASIS and comments are mine:

That they were WONT (or as they were ACCUSTOMED and USED to do, or in the HABIT of doing), on a STATED day (or on a CERTAIN preset day), to meet together BEFORE IT WAS LIGHT, and to sing a hymn to Christ, as to a god, alternately; and to oblige themselves by a sacrament [or oath], not to do anything that was ill: but that they would commit no theft, or pilfering, or adultery; that they would not break their promises, or deny what was deposited with them, when it was required back again; after which it was their CUSTOM to depart, AND to meet AGAIN at a common but innocent meal,(so after the hard worship service early morning beginning before day light they would depart and they come back together later that same to to share a common simple meal together, and most likely break bread together as other early church writers give more detail) which they had left off upon that edict which I published at your command, and wherein I had forbidden any such conventicles (or religious meetings).”

          Below are some quotes of early church writers that clearly teach us that the early church did NOT keep the Sabbath day, as in, on SATURDAY, the 7th day of the week, but rather the early church throughout history from it's beginning worshiped God on SUNDAY the FIRST day of the week, which is sometimes referred to as the EIGHTH day of the week or the day AFTER the Sabbath day, or the LORD'S DAY. 

(The emphasis is mine in these quotes given below):

1. But every Lord's day do ye gather yourselves together, and break bread, and give thanksgiving after having confessed your transgressions, that your sacrifice may be pure.

2. But let no one that is at variance with his fellow come together with you, until they be reconciled, that your sacrifice may not be profaned.

3. For this is that which was spoken by the Lord: In every place and time offer to me a pure sacrifice; for I am a great King, saith the Lord, and my name is wonderful among the nations." (Didache: The Teaching of the Twelve Apostles, Chapter XIV)

#2. 100 AD BARNABAS:

"We keep the eighth day [Sunday] with joyfulness, the day also on which Jesus rose again from the dead" (The Epistle of Barnabas, 100 AD 15:6-8).

#3. 100 AD BARNABAS:

Moreover God says to the Jews, 'Your new moons and Sabbaths I cannot endure.' You see how he says, 'The present Sabbaths are not acceptable to me, but the Sabbath which I have made in which, when I have rested [heaven: Heb 4] from all things, I will make the beginning of the eighth day which is the beginning of another world.' Wherefore we Christians keep the eighth day for joy, on which also Jesus arose from the dead and when he appeared ascended into heaven. (15:8f, The Epistle of Barnabas, 100 AD, Ante-Nicene Fathers , vol. 1, pg. 147)

#4. 110 AD Pliny:

They were in the habit of meeting on a certain fixed day before it was light, when they sang in alternate verses a hymn to Christ, as to a god, and bound themselves by a solemn oath not to (do) any wicked deeds, never to commit any fraud, theft, or adultery, never to falsify their word, nor deny a trust when they should be called upon to deliver it up; after which it was their custom to separate, and then reassemble to partake of good food—but food of an ordinary and innocent kind. (About three years after the death of Ignatius in 250, an important official communication was sent from one Pliny to Trajan the Roman emperor. Pliny, the Roman governor of Bithynia, wrote of the Christians who had been congregating there probably from at least A.D. 62 onwards. In this remarkable it is explicitly stated that these early Christians observed the substance of most of the Ten Commandments, and it is implied that they observed all ten as far as they were able to do so. As far as they were able, for as most of the early Christians were of slave stock or from other lower classes'-, and those who had heathen masters or employers—the vast majority—would be forced to work on THEIR day of rest, which was unfortunately an official working day throughout the empires' until Constantine's "Sabbath" Edict in 321 A.D. gave them some measure of public protection. Hence one reads that after meeting "on a certain FIXED day before it was light", the first century Bithynian Christians had "to separate"—many of them having to labour for their masters and/or employers from dawn to dusk—"and then reassemble to partake of . . . food". The "certain fixed day" [stato die"'] on which the Christians met, is regarded by Seventh-day Adventists as Saturday'-. Certainly the expression would seem to indicate a regular day of meeting, probably each week. But Sunday is FAR more likely to have been the "certain fixed day" than Saturday. For if Pliny had been referring to the old Saturday Sabbath, as a Roman he would doubtless have referred to the "later" meeting first and only then to the morning meeting on the day after the "certain fixed day", seeing that the old Saturday Sabbath was demarcated from the evening of one day to the evening of the following day. But Pliny makes no such reference. Instead, he mentions that the pre-dawn meeting took place first—and only after wards the later meeting; and that both meetings took place on the SAME "certain fixed day". This rather points to the Roman (and—more importantly!—New Testament) midnight to midnight demarcation of modern Sunday-keepers than to the evening to evening demarcation of the Jews and the Seventh-day Adventists. (The Covenantial Sabbath, Francis Nigel Lee, Pg 242)

          Also I myself will further add to the comment of the writer above that mere common sense plainly teaches us that Pliny was clearly speaking of SUNDAY, because the LAW that Constantine passed was not to mandate work on SUNDAY so that these Christians could worship God on SUNDAY. So the CLAIM by the Seventh Day Advent church that the fixed day of worship for Christians was a Saturday is FALSE. Other wise Constantine would have made it a law the employers allowed Christians off for work on a Saturday rather than on a Sunday. 

          This PROVES beyond any shadow of a doubt that the Christians were ALREADY worshiping God on SUNDAY the FIRST DAY of the week from the very beginning of the church on the day of Pentecost. The truth of the matter is that Constantine only made it easier for Christians to worship God on Sunday without being persecuted by their employers or owners by passing the EDICT making it a LAW to force heathen employers to let their employees have at least some time off from work so that they could worship God on SUNDAY. 

          Every Sabbath keeper will AGREE that Constantine's "SABBATH" is referring to SUNDAY as the day of the week and NOT as Saturday being the REST for Christians. Again all the Constantine did was to pass a law making it EASIER fro Christian to worship on the DAY that they had ALREADY been worshiping on since the very beginning at the DAY of PENTECOST, which is on SUNDAY the FIRST day of the week that Christian called the LORD'S day the day our Lord rose from the grave. 

          Open your EYES dear child of God and read what these early church writings are teaching us about the EARLIEST believers as to which day the early church worshiped God. SUNDAY has ALWAYS been the Sabbath or the day of REST of the early church and the church throughout it's entire history.


- I [Christ] have come into being on the eighth day which is the day of the Lord. (18)

#6. 150 AD JUSTIN:

"He then speaks of those Gentiles, namely us, who in every place offer sacrifices to Him, i.e., the bread of the Eucharist, and also the cup of the Eucharist, affirming both that we glorify His name, and that you profane [it]. The command of circumcision, again, bidding [them] always circumcise the children on the eighth day, was a type of the true circumcision, by which we are circumcised from deceit and iniquity through Him who rose from the dead on the first day AFTER the Sabbath, [namely through] our Lord Jesus Christ. For the first day after the Sabbath, remaining the first of all the days, is called, however, the eighth, according to the number of all the days of the cycle, and [yet] remains the first.". (Justin, Dialogue 41:4)

#7. 150 AD JUSTIN:

...those who have persecuted and do persecute Christ, if they do not repent, shall not inherit anything on the holy mountain. But the Gentiles, who have believed on Him, and have repented of the sins which they have committed, they shall receive the inheritance along with the patriarchs and the prophets, and the just men who are descended from Jacob, even although theyneither keep the Sabbath, nor are circumcised, nor observe the feasts. Assuredly they shall receive the holy inheritance of God. (Dialogue With Trypho the Jew, 150-165 AD, Ante-Nicene Fathers , vol. 1, page 207)

#8. 150 AD JUSTIN:

But if we do not admit this, we shall be liable to fall into foolish opinion, as if it were not the same God who existed in the times of Enoch and all the rest, who neither were circumcised after the flesh, nor observed Sabbaths, nor any other rites, seeing that Moses enjoined such observances... For if there was no need of circumcision before Abraham, or of the observance of Sabbaths, of feasts and sacrifices, before Moses; no more need is there of them now, after that, according to the will of God, Jesus Christ the Son of God has been born without sin, of a virgin sprung from the stock of Abraham. (Dialogue With Trypho the Jew, 150-165 AD, Ante-Nicene Fathers , vol. 1, page 206)

#9. 150 AD JUSTIN:

Moreover, all those righteous men already mentioned [after mentioning Adam. Abel, Enoch, Lot, Noah, Melchizedek, and Abraham], though they kept no Sabbaths, were pleasing to God; and after them Abraham with all his descendants until Moses... And you [fleshly Jews] were commanded to keep Sabbaths, that you might retain the memorial of God. For His word makes this announcement, saying, "That you may know that I am God who redeemed you." (Dialogue With Trypho the Jew, 150-165 AD, Ante-Nicene Fathers , vol. 1, page 204)

#10. 150 AD JUSTIN:

There is no other thing for which you blame us, my friends, is there than this? That we do not live according to the Law, nor, are we circumcised in the flesh as your forefathers, nor do we observe the Sabbath as you do. (Dialogue with Trypho 10:1. In verse 3 the Jew Trypho acknowledges that Christians 'do not keep the Sabbath.')

#11. 155 AD Justin Martyr:

"[W]e too would observe the fleshly circumcision, and the Sabbaths, and in short all the feasts, if we did not know for what REASON they were enjoined [on] you--namely, on account of your transgressions and the hardness of your heart. . . . [H]ow is it, Trypho, that we would not observethose rites which do  not harm us--I speak of fleshly circumcision AND Sabbaths AND feasts? . . . God enjoined you [Jews] to keep the Sabbath,and impose on you other precepts for a sign, as I have already said, on account of your unrighteousness and that of your fathers" (Dialogue with Trypho the Jew 18, 21).

#12. 180 AD ACTS OF PETER:

Paul had often contended with the Jewish teachers and had confuted them, saying 'it is Christ on whom your fathers laid hands. He abolished their Sabbath and fasts and festivals and circumcision.' (1: I)-2


Early in the morning when (the Sabbath dawned, a multitude from Jerusalem and the surrounding country came to see the scaled sepulchre. In the night in which the Lord's day dawned, while the soldiers in pairs for each watch were keeping guard, a great voice came from heaven. [There follows an account of the resurrection. Early in the morning of the Lord's day Mary Magdalene, a disciple of the Lord .... came to the sepulchre. (9:34f.; 12:50f.)


(in commenting on each of the Ten Commandments and their Christian meaning:) The seventh day is proclaimed a day of rest, PREPARING by abstention from evil FOR the Primal day, our TRUE rest. (Ibid. VII. xvi. 138.1)

          I will add that the meaning of the word "Primal" means an "ARCHETYPAL", which means an original TYPE pointing to the TRUE. So this early church writer is saying what Paul teaches us in scripture that the things in the OLD Testament are TYPES and SHADOWS or the TRUE which was to come. Jesus became our SABBATH, and we have entered into our REST being in Jesus Christ. The SABBATH was an ARCHETYPAL pointing toward our TRUE REST which was to come being FULFILLED in the ATONEMENT of Jesus.


He does the commandment according to the Gospel and keeps the Lord's day, whenever he puts away an evil mind . . . glorifying the Lord's resurrection in himself. (Ibid. Vii.xii.76.4)


Plato prophetically speaks of the Lord's day in the tenth book of the Republic, in these words: 'And when seven days have passed to each of them in the meadow, on the eighth they must go on." (Miscellanies V.xiv.106.2)


Wherever we are, we are all called after the one name of Christ Christians. On one day, the first of the week, we assemble ourselves together (On Fate)


"We solemnize the day AFTER Saturday in contradistinction to those who call this day their Sabbath" (Tertullian's Apology, Ch 16)

          In other words, Tertullian is saying that we Christians DISTINGUISH us from the JEWS who hold Saturday as THEIR Sabbath by solemnizing or reverencing the day AFTER Saturday as our day of worship and rest.


It follows, accordingly, that, in so far as the abolition of carnal circumcision and of the old law is demonstrated as having been consummated at its specific times, so ALSO the observance of the Sabbath is demonstrated to have been temporary. (An Answer to the Jews 4:1, Ante-Nicene Fathers Vol. 3, page 155)


Let him who contends that the Sabbath is still to be observed a balm of salvation, and circumcision on the eighth day because of threat of death, teach us that in earliest times righteous men kept Sabbath or practiced circumcision, and so were made friends of God. .. ...Therefore, since God originated Adam uncircumcised, and inobservant of the Sabbath, consequently his offspring also, Abel, offering Him sacrifices, uncircumcised and inobservant of the Sabbath, was by Him commended... Noah also, uncircumcised - yes, and inobservant of the Sabbath - God freed from the deluge. For Enoch, too, most righteous man, uncircumcised and inobservant of the Sabbath, He translated from this world... Melchizedek also, "the priest of most high God," uncircumcised and inobservant of the Sabbath, was chosen to the priesthood of God. (An Answer to the Jews 2:10; 4:1, Ante-Nicene Fathers Vol. 3, page 153)


Others . . . suppose that the sun is the god of the Christians, because it is well-known that we regard Sunday as a day of joy. (To the Nations 1: 133)

          Keep in mind that this was well BEFORE Constantine SUPPOSEDLY CHANGED the day of rest and worship to SUNday as the Seventh Day Adventist church CLAIMS. But it TRUTH Christians had ALREADY been worshiping God on SUNDAY, the FIRST day of the week that they also called the LORD'S day, the day that our Lord and savior Jesus rose from the dead. 

          So as early as Tertullian in 200 AD there were groups of JEWS and Christian JEWS who ASSUMED or who SUPPOSED, or who FALSELY ACCUSED Christians for worshiping God on SUNDAY that they were worshiping a sun god and not the true God.


To us Sabbaths are foreign. (On Idolatry, 14:6)4

#23. 220 AD ORIGEN:

"On Sunday none of the actions of the world should be done. If then, you abstain from all the works of this world and keep yourselves free for spiritual things, go to church, listen to the readings and divine homilies, meditate on heavenly things. (Homil. 23 in Numeros 4, PG 12:749)

#24. 220 AD Origen:

"Hence it is not possible that the [day of] rest after the Sabbath should have come into existence from the seventh [day] of our God. On the contrary, it is our Savior who, after the pattern of his own rest, caused us to be made in the likeness of his death, and hence also of his resurrection" (Commentary on John 2:28).

#25. 225 AD The Didascalia:

"The apostles further appointedOn the first day of the week let there be service, and the reading of the Holy Scriptures, and the oblation, because on the first day of the week our Lord rose from the place of the dead, and on the first day of the week he arose upon the world, and on the first day of the week he ascended up to heaven, and on the first day of the week he will appear at last with the angels of heaven" (Didascalia 2).

          And I add further that the church BEGAN on the day of Pentecost on a SUNDAY, the FIRST day of the week. The early church evidence and the word of TRUTH, the Holy Bible make it quite clear that the early church worshiped God on SUNDAY the FIRST day of the week, called the LORD'S day and that they did NOT KEEP the Sabbath day as the JEWS.

#26. 250 AD CYPRIAN:

The eight day, that is, the first day after the Sabbath, and the Lord's Day." (Epistle 58, Sec 4)

#27. 250 AD IGNATIUS:

"If, therefore, those who were brought up in the ancient order of things have come to the possession of a new hope, no longer observing the Sabbath, but living in the observance of the Lord's Day, on which also our life has sprung up again by Him and by His death-whom some deny, by which mystery we have obtained faith, and therefore endure, that we may be found the disciples of Jesus Christ, our only Master-how shall we be able to live apart from Him, whose disciples the prophets themselves in the Spirit did wait for Him as their Teacher? And therefore He whom they rightly waited for, being come, raised them from the dead. If, then, those who were conversant with the ancient Scriptures came to newness of hope, expecting the coming of Christ, as the Lord teaches us when He says, "If ye had believed Moses, ye would have believed Me, for he wrote of Me; " and again, "Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it, and was glad; for before Abraham was, I am; " how shall we be able to live without Him? The prophets were His servants, and foresaw Him by the Spirit, and waited for Him as their Teacher, and expected Him as their Lord and Saviour, saying, "He will come and save us." Let us therefore NO longer keep the Sabbath after the Jewish manner, and rejoice in days of idleness; for "he that does not work, let him not eat." For say the [holy] oracles, "In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat thy bread." But let every one of you keep the Sabbath after a spiritual manner, rejoicing in meditation on the law, NOT in relaxation of the body, admiring the workmanship of God, and not eating things prepared the day before, nor using lukewarm drinks, and walking within a prescribed space, nor finding delight in dancing and plaudits which have no sense in them. And after the observance of the Sabbath, let every friend of Christ keep the Lord's Day as a festival, the resurrection-day, the queen and chief of all the days [of the week].Looking forward to this, the prophet declared, "To the end, for the eighth day," on which our life both sprang up again, and the victory over death was obtained in Christ, whom the children of perdition, the enemies of the Saviour, deny, "whose god is their belly, who mind earthly things," who are "lovers of pleasure, and not lovers of God, having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof." These make merchandise of Christ, corrupting His word, and giving up Jesus to sale: they are corrupters of women, and covetous of other men's possessions, swallowing up wealth insatiably; from whom may ye be delivered by the mercy of God through our Lord Jesus Christ! (Epistle of Ignatius to the Magnesians, Chapter IX)

#28. 250 AD IGNATIUS:

"On the day of the preparation, then, at the third hour, He received the sentence from Pilate, the Father permitting that to happen; at the sixth hour He was crucified; at the ninth hour He gave up the ghost; and before sunset He was buried. During the Sabbath He continued under the earth in the tomb in which Joseph of Arimathaea had laid Him. At the dawning of the Lord's day He arose from the dead, according to what was spoken by Himself, "As Jonah was three days and three nights in the whale's belly, so shall the Son of man also be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. "The day of the preparation, then, comprises the passion; the Sabbath embraces the burial; the Lord's Day contains the resurrection." (The Epistle of Ignatius to the Trallians, chapter 9)

#29. 250 AD IGNATIUS:

If any one fasts on the Lord's Day or on the Sabbath, except on the paschal Sabbath only, he is a murderer of Christ. (The Epistle of Ignatius to the Philippians, chapter 8)

#30. 250 AD IGNATIUS:

"This [custom], of not bending the knee upon Sunday, is a symbol of the resurrection, through which we have been set free, by the grace of Christ, from sins, and from death, which has been put to death under Him. Now this custom took its rise from apostolic times, as the blessed Irenaeus, the martyr and bishop of Lyons, declares in his treatise On Easter, in which he makes mention of Pentecost also; upon which [feast] we do not bend the knee, because it is of equal significance with the Lord's day, for the reason already alleged concerning it." (Ignatius, Fragments)

#31. 300 AD Victorinus:

"The sixth day [Friday] is called parasceve, that is to say, the preparation of the kingdom. . . . On this day also, on account of the passion of the Lord Jesus Christ, we make either a station to God or a fast. On the seventh day he rested from all his works, and blessed it, and sanctified it. On the former day we are accustomed to fast rigorously, that on the Lord's day we may go forth to our bread with giving of thanks. And let the parasceve become a rigorous fast, lest we should APPEAR to observe ANY Sabbath with the Jews . . . which Sabbath he [Christ] in his body ABOLISHED" (The Creation of the World).

#32. 300 AD EUSEBIUS:

"They did not, therefore, regard circumcision, NOR observe the Sabbath NEITHER do we; ... because such things as these do NOT belong to Christians" (Ecc. Hist., Book 1, Ch. 4)

#33. 300 AD EUSEBIUS:

[The Ebionites] were accustomed to observe the Sabbath and other Jewish customs but on the Lord's days to celebrate the same practices as we in remembrance of the resurrection of the Savior. (Church History Ill.xxvii.5)

I will also add that the Ebionites were Christians who were seduced by the Jews to keep the Jewish customs. In other words, the Ebionites were Judanized Christians. The Ebionites also taught the need to be circumcised in the flesh in order to be saved. Some today would not even consider Ebionites as being true Christians since they went back to trusting the law of Moses to be saved.

#34. 300 AD Eusebius of Caesarea:

"They [the pre- Mosaic saints of the Old Testament] did not care about circumcision of the body, neither do we [Christians]. They did not care about observing Sabbaths, nor do we. They did not avoid certain kinds of food, neither did they regard the other distinctions which Moses first delivered to their posterity to be observed as symbolsnor do Christians of the present day do such things" (Church History 1:4:8).

#35. 300 AD Eusebius of Caesarea:

"The day of his [Christ's] light . . . was the day of his resurrection from the dead, which they say, as being the one and only truly holy day and the Lord's day, is better than any number of days as we ordinarily understand them, and better than the days set apart by the Mosaic Law for feasts, new moons, and Sabbaths, which the Apostle [Paul] teaches are the shadow of days and not days in reality" (Proof of the Gospel 4:16:186).

#36. 345 AD Athanasius:

"The Sabbath was the end of the first creation, the Lord's day was the beginning of the second, in which he renewed and restored the old in the same way as he prescribed that they should formerly observe the Sabbath as a memorial of the end of the first things, so we honor the Lord's day as being the memorial of the new creation" (On Sabbath and Circumcision 3).


Be not careless of yourselves, neither deprive your Saviour of His own members, neither divide His body nor disperse His members, neither prefer the occasions of this life to the word of God; but assemble yourselves together every day, morning and evening, singing psalms and praying in the Lord's house: in the morning saying the sixty-second Psalm, and in the evening the hundred and fortieth, but principally on the Sabbath-day. And on the day of our Lord's resurrection, which is the Lord's day, meet more diligently, sending praise to God that made the universe by Jesus, and sent Him to us, and condescended to let Him suffer, and raised Him from the dead. Otherwise what apology will he make to God who does not assemble on that day to hear the saving word concerning the resurrection, on which we pray thrice standing in memory of Him who arose in three days, in which is performed the reading of the prophets, the preaching of the Gospel, the oblation of the sacrifice, the gift of the holy food? (Constitutions of the Holy Apostles, book 2)


"How We Ought to Assemble Together, and to Celebrate the Festival Day of Our Saviour's Resurrection. On the day of the resurrection of the Lord, that is, the Lord's day, assemble yourselves together, without fail, giving thanks to God, and praising Him for those mercies God has bestowed upon you through Christ, and has delivered you from ignorance, error, and bondage, that your sacrifice may be unspotted, and acceptable to God,..." (Constitutions of the Holy Apostles, book 7)

#39. 350 AD Cyril of Jerusalem:

"Fall NOT AWAY either into the sect of the Samaritans or into Judaism, for Jesus Christ has henceforth ransomed you. Stand aloof from ALL observance of Sabbaths and from calling any indifferent meats common or unclean" (Catechetical Lectures 4:37).

#40. 360 AD Council of Laodicea:

"Christians should NOT Judaize and should NOT be idle on the Sabbath, but should work on that day; they should, however, particularly reverence the Lord's day and, if possible, not work on it, because they were Christians" (canon 29).

#41. 387 AD John Chrysostom:

"You have put on Christ, you have become a member of the Lord and been enrolled in the heavenly city, and you still grovel in the Law [of Moses]? How is it possible for you to obtain the kingdom? Listen to Paul's words, that the observance of the Law overthrows the gospel, and learn, if you will, how this comes to pass, and tremble, and shun this pitfallWhy do you keep the Sabbath and fast with the Jews?" (Homilies on Galatians 2:17).

#42. 412 AD Augustine:

"Well, now, I should like to be told what there is in these Ten Commandments, except the observance of the Sabbath, which ought NOT to be kept by a Christian . . . Which of these commandments would anyone say that the Christian ought not to keep? It is possible to contend that it is not the Law which was written on those two tables that the apostle [Paul] describes as 'the letter that kills' [2 Cor. 3:6], but the law of circumcision and the other sacred rites which are now abolished" (The Spirit and the Letter 24).

#43. 597 AD Gregory I:

"But after that the grace of almighty God, our Lord Jesus Christ, has appeared, the commandments of the Law which were spoken figuratively cannot be kept according to the letter. For if anyone says that this about the Sabbath is to be kept, he must needs say that carnal sacrifices are to be offered. He must say too that the commandment about the circumcision of the body is still to be retained. But let him hear the apostle Paul saying in opposition to him: 'If you be circumcised, Christ will profit you nothing' (Gal. 5:2)" (Letters 13:1).
