Revelation 1:8 I AM ALPHA AND OMEGA

Revelation 1:8 “I AM THE ALPHA AND OMEGA”

This phrase “I am the Alpha and the Omega is found four times in the Bible and all four times are in the book of Revelation. Most Christians know that BOTH Almighty God the Father AND his Son Jesus spoke these same words in the first person singular. In other words, Almighty God the Father said, “I am Alpha and Omega” and the SON OF Almighty God the Father ALSO said, “I am the Alpha and Omega”.

And both the Oneness Christians and the Trinitarian Christians interpret these four verses to mean that Jesus is saying that he is Yahweh HIMSELF. But that is NOT what these four verses state. These four verses simply say, “I am the Alpha and the Omega.” So then, what did Jesus mean when he said that he was the Alpha and the Omega? And what did Yahweh the Father mean when he said that he was the Alpha and the Omega?

The Alpha and the Omega are the first and that last LETTERS of the Greek alphabet. The alphabet in any language is used to form WORDS. And the first and last LETTERS of the Hebrew alphabet are the Aleph and the Tav. So I believe that Jesus was saying that he is the Aleph and the Tav in the SCRIPTURES. In other words, Jesus is saying that he is PROPHESIED to come in the written word of God. Please read the study “WHAT DO THE ALEPH AND THE TAV MEAN?” But for now, just briefly, Jesus told the children of Israel that they searched the Scriptures for ETERNAL LIFE and that the SCRIPTURES testify of HIM. So Jesus is saying that he is the living word of God that was made flesh and that he has the teaching of the word of God that brings eternal life to those who believe and obey his teachings under the New Covenant written in the New Testament. And Yahweh the Father is saying that he created the Aleph and the Tav. In other words, Yahweh came up with the ideal to forms words to speak. For you see Yahweh ALONE and by himself created everything that exists by SPEAKING words out from his mouth. And then Yahweh the Father watches over and PERFORMS those words to make them come to pass. For a deeper understanding of the Aleph and the Tav please read part two of this study that I have titled “WHAT DOES I AM THE ALPHA AND OMEGA MEAN?” But for now here is part one.

This phrase “ALPHA AND OMEGA” is used four times in the Bible and all four times it used are found in the book of Revelation. The purpose of this study is to find if these verses where this phase “I am the Alpha and  Omega” prove without a doubt that Jesus IS the Almighty God, as in, one and the same divine eternal being with the Father. Please keep in mind that IF these verses do in fact teach that Jesus IS Almighty God, as in, one and the same being as Almighty God the FATHER, then this would NOT prove the DOCTRINE of the trinity that clearly teaches that Jesus is NOT the Father, but would rather be more supportive of the false doctrine of ONENESS, which teaches that Jesus IS the FATHER.

Let us begin this study in God's word by reading Revelation 1:8. I will highlight in orange the words and pronouns that refer to Almighty God Yahweh the Father.

Revelation 1:8.

I am the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, SAYS the Lord, which is, which was, and which is to come, THE ALMIGHTY.”

The word of God makes it perfectly clear that the one who is speaking and saying that he is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, IS the Lord God Almighty. We know this again by comparing scripture with scripture.

Take a look at the last part of Revelation 4:8.

“.....Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, which is, and which is to come.”

The phase or words “which was, which is, and which is to come” always refer to the Lord God Almighty, which from what I can see always refers to Almighty God the FATHER in the word of God. The disciples of Jesus always clearly identified the ONE God as being the Father and the ONE Lord as being Jesus the Christ. Simply do a word search in a Bible concordance using the phrase “one God” for yourself or you can click on the link to the study “DOES HEBREWS 1:10 PROVE THAT JESUS IS YAHWEH?” and scroll down toward the end of that study to find every verse in the New Testament clearly identifying the FATHER as the ONE God, who is the God OF Jesus the anointed of God.Also this will become quite clear as we continue this study in God's word in search for the TRUTH of the whole word of God.

The next time this phrase containing the words “Alpha and Omega” is found is in Revelation 1:10,11.

Please read Revelation 1:10.11.

“I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and I heard BEHIND me a great VOICE, as of a trumpet,

11. Saying, I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last: and what you see, write in a book, and send it to the seven churches which are in Asia.”

Again, the one who is speaking in this verse is ALSO Almighty God, the Father. Some may argue with this because in some Bibles the words are in red. Keep in mind that they have been placed in red letters by the translators, who have INTERPRETED these words to be the words to be Jesus as the one who is speaking. Again, please keep in mind that it is important to remember that these words in red letter are printed in red by the translator to signify that Jesus is the one speaking. And thus it is only the OPINION or the INTERPRETATION of the translator to be the words of Jesus. HOWEVER, in this particular case in Revelation 1:8 these translators have made an error concerning this verse as I will plainly show to you by reading the context along with another verse spoken by John. Remember that the first rule if interpretation is to consider the whole CONTEXT in which the verse in question is found.

First I want to draw your attention to verse 10 that we just read where John hears BEHIND him a great voice as of a TRUMPET. Clearly seeing and understanding that there are TWO voices that John hears in this CONTEXT is very important to discerning the TRUTH of WHO is the one that is saying that he is the Alpha and Omega, THE ALMIGHTY. With this in mind now let's continue to read Revelation 1:12-15.

Revelation 1:12-15.

“And I turned to SEE the VOICE (As of a TRUMPET) that spoke with me. And being turned I SAW seven golden candlesticks;

13. And in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks one like the Son of man clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle.

14.  His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire;

15. And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in the furnace; and HIS voice as the sound of MANY WATERS.”

You see my dear brothers and sisters in the Lord, there were TWO DIFFERENT voices. The FIRST voice that was behind John that he could NOT SEE the one who had a great voice as of a TRUMPET. And in a moment you will clearly see that the FIRST voice as oa a TRUMPET was the voice of Almighty God the FATHER. And thus you will see that the SECOND voice, which belongs to the one John SAW when he turned to see the FIRST voice as of a trumpet, but instead John SAW one like the Son of man and HIS voice was as the sound of many waters. You see, the one having the FIRST voice that John did NOT see was as of a TRUMPET, which John ONLY heard the one who was speaking. BUT John did NOT actually see the one who was speaking that had the voice of a TRUMPET. Keep in mind that this is in complete harmony with God's word that says, NO man has seen God nor can see him.

Please read 1 Timothy 6:14-16.

“That you keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ:

5.  Which in his times (Speaking of both the first and second comings of Jesus) he (Jesus) shall show, WHO is the blessed and ONLY Potentate (The word Potentate means Sovereign or over all, which means the ALMIGHTY. Jesus came to show us the FATHER who is the ONLY Potentate. And since the Father is the God OF his Son Jesus, then that means that Jesus is NOT the Almighty God. But rather Jesus came to SHOW us WHO the ONE TRUE and ONLY Almighty God IS. You see, Almighty God Yahweh the Father is the ETERNAL King), the King of kings, and Lord of lords;

16.  Who ONLY has immortality, dwelling in the light which NO man can approach unto; whom NO man hath seen, NOR CAN SEE: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.”

God is Spirit and invisible so no mortal man can ever see the invisible Almighty God the Father who has always had immortality, and who is not a man, nor the son of man.

So again, John did NOT SEE the one whose voice was as of a trumpet, but rather only TURNED to see the one speaking and when John turned he saw instead one like the Son of man, who had a DIFFERENT voice as the sound of many waters. Pay attention to what the word of God is actually saying and notice how as John turned to SEE who was speaking he INSTEAD saw one like the Son of MAN and when he heard HIS voice it was DIFFERENT than the FIRST voice. You may be thinking that I am reading to much into this, but if you keep reading you will see otherwise.

John confirms that there were TWO different voices in Revelation 4:1. This is known as letting scripture interpret scripture, rather than interpreting a verse with ones own bias opinion. Please notice that John calls this voice as of a trumpet the FIRST voice that he heard.

Revelation 4:1.

“After this I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the FIRST voice which I heard as it were a TRUMPET talking with me; which said Come up hither, and I will show things which must come hereafter.”

So in this verse you can see that John is finishing up telling us what he BOTH saw and heard when he was in the Spirit on the Lord's day back in Revelation 1:8-10. The word FIRSTused here lets us know that there were no less than one other voice meaning there were at least TWO voices that John heard on the Lord's day. In other words, the word first demands that there be a no less than a SECOND voice, but not necessarily a third or four voice and so on. Again the FIRST voice as of a TRUMPET was Almighty God the Father's voice.

Revelation 1:8.

I am the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, SAYS the Lord, which is, which was, and which is to come, THE ALMIGHTY.”

So CLEARLY the the one speaking in this verse, Revelation 1:8 is THE ALMIGHTY God who is the FATHER. This will be proven without a doubt as we continue this study in God's word. But before we take a closer look at the phase "which is, which was, and which is to come, let's look at the third time that this phrase “Alpha and Omega” is used which is found in Revelation 21:6.

Revelation 21:6.

“And he said unto me, it is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is a thirst of the fountain of living water of life freely.”

This verse is ALSO referring to Almighty God the Father. The context makes it clear that it is God the Father saying, “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end.”

Back up to verses 3-5 in Revelation 21.

“And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and he shall be his people, and God HIMSELF shall be with them, and be their God.

4. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

5. And HE that say upon THE THRONE said, Behold I make all things new. And HE said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.

6. And HE (The one who sits upon THE THRONE) said unto me, it is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end....”

The word of TRUTH, the Holy Bible teaches us that it is Almighty God HIMSELF that sits upon THE THRONE and Jesus HIS SON is seated at his right hand. Please read Revelation 5:1 along with verse 7.

Revelation 5:1,7.

“5. And I saw in the right hand of HIM that sat on THE THRONE a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals...

...7. And he (Speaking of the Lamb, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the root and OFFSPRING OF David) came and TOOK the BOOK out of the HAND of HIM the sat upon the THRONE.”

The word of God leaves no doubt that it is Almighty God HIMSELF that sits upon the THRONE. So in all three of these verses it is Almighty God the Father which says that he is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.

Before we look at the fourth and final time we find this phase “I am the Alpha and the Omega” let's go to Isaiah 44:6 and take a look.

Isaiah 44:6

“Thus says the LORD (Yahweh) the King of Israel, and HIS REDEEMER the LORD (Yahweh) of hosts; I am the first and the last; and beside me there is NO God.”

In this verse we clearly see that Almighty God tells us himself that there is NO other God beside him. In other words, there is but ONE God, who is the Most High God. The LITERAL translation actually say that there is no God APART from me. Please read the studies “THERE IS BUT ONE GOD!” and “OUR GOD IS ONE!” But for now please know and understand that God highly exalted to Son of MAN Jesus to become the God of the whole earth to rule FOR Yahweh fro 1000 years.

Also, notice that Almighty God, the LORD or Yahweh of hosts, the LORD or Yahweh the King of Israel is HIS REDEEMER. So who is the HIS that this verse is referring to?

In verse 1 we see that it is Jacob his servant and Israel whom he has chosen that is being spoken to.

Isaiah 44:1.

“Yet now hear, O Jacob my servant: and Israel, whom I have chosen.”

Now let's back up in the previous chapter Isaiah 43:1-4 and learn more of who Jacob and Israel are symbolically representing. Who they are FORESHADOWING to come.

Many passages in the Old Testament give both a historical account of what is happening and also a PROPHECY of what will take place yet in the future.

Isaiah 43:1-4.

“But now thus says the Lord that CREATED YOU, O Jacob, and FORMED you, O Israel, Fear not: for I have REDEEMED you, I have called you by your name; you are mine.

2. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you: when you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon you.

3. For I am the Lord YOUR God, the Holy One of Israel, YOUR SAVIOR: I gave Egypt for your RANSOM  (The price you paid) Ethiopia and Seba for YOU.

4. Since YOU were precious in my sight, YOU have been honorable, and I have loved YOU: therefore I will give MEN FOR YOU, and PEOPLE for YOUR LIFE: (Your RANSOM. The price that YOU paid by dying on the cross to redeem them)

Now Jesus is the ONLY ONE that I know that God gave for a RANSOM for mankind. Egypt is a type of shadow of the world or mankind. God gave MEN or MANKIND to his Son for the price he paid to redeem mankind back to God.

So this verse is telling us that Almighty God is the Lord God and SAVIOR of Jesus, and that Almighty God the Father CREATED and FORMED Jesus. Then the word goes on and says that God Almighty gave Egypt, which is to say the world or all of mankind in return for Jesus being a RANSOM. Jesus gave HIS LIFE in return for our freedom from Satan. Jesus set the captive free by his RANSOM, his death and resurrection. God prophesied, and said, I will give MEN for you, speaking of Jesus his SON, and PEOPLE for YOUR LIFE. Jacob and Israel are types and shadows of Jesus.

Now with this in mind let's take a look at the last or fourth time the phrase “I am the Alpha and Omega” occurs in the Bible.

Look at Revelation 22:12, 13.

“And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give to every man according as his work shall be.

13. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.”

It seems pretty clear that this is Jesus speaking here. BUT it is NOT clear that Jesus saying that he HIMSELF is Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. For you see, just because Jesus says these words which Almighty God says about himself does NOT prove that Jesus is Almighty God Yahweh HIMSELF. I believe that Jesus is speaking these word FOR Yahweh because in the very next verse Jesus says HIS commandment as opposed to saying MY commandments.

Please read Revelation 22:14.

Blessed are they that do HIS (Or Yahweh the Father’s )commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.”

Those that teach the doctrine of the Trinity and that Jesus is Almighty God Yahweh HIMSELF claim that this verse definitely shows that Jesus and God the Father are one and the SAME Almighty God simply because Jesus says, “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.” They argue that since the Father said the SAME exact words then the proves that Jesus is Yahweh himself.

If one is to accept this deduction and line of REASONING as being the ONLY way to interpret this verse then they must THROW OUT all the other verses of the Bible that clearly show that Jesus is the SON of God and NOT Almighty God HIMSELF. Jesus was, is and ever shall be UNDER Almighty God the Father and SUBJECT to his God his Father. Also, when one demands that Jesus IS Yahweh, then to ME they are demanding that Jesus is the FATHER.

Now if my father were to say “I am a carpenter” and then me also being a carpenter would say the same thing, “I am a carpenter” does this make me and my father to be one and the SAME person or being? Obviously, NO it does not. Neither does this verse prove that Jesus is the ONE TRUE and ONLY Almighty God just because he says the same words as his Father. For you see, in the LIGHT of the WHOLE word of God, we can plainly see that this is NOT the case. And AGAIN, IF Jesus simply saying these words, I am ALPHA and OMEGA which are the same words that Almighty God also spoke, then this would support the false ONENESS DOCTRINE more so that the doctrine of the Trinity which correctly teaches that Jesus is NOT the Father.

Now again, it can also be interpreted that Jesus is speaking here in behalf of his Father. It may be that BOTH the Father and Jesus are speaking in these words to apply to themselves but in slightly different ways. But I personally believe that Jesus is speaking in BEHALF OF or FOR Yahweh. You see, when Jesus comes again, Almighty God the Father is coming with him, or more precisely Almighty God the Father is BRINGING his SON, Jesus WITH him. And they are traveling together in the city of God. But that is another study for another day.

The reason I say that it can also be that Jesus is speaking for God the Father when he said “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last,” is because of the very next verse. Again, taking in account the CONTEXT.

Revelation 22:14 which says,

“Blessed are they that do HIS commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates of the city.”

If Jesus were truly Almighty God HIMSELF as some falsely teach, then he would have said, “Blessed are they that do MY commandments.”

So it is my conclusion that just because Jesus seems to say of himself that he is Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last does NOT prove that he is God, being FULLY God in the flesh and the one TRUE God, Almighty God who ALONE is the Father. Even IF the word of God clearly shows that Jesus says he is Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last it would still have to be ASSUMED that Jesus and the God the Father are one and the same on the basis that they both said they were Alpha and Omega. However, in doing this, I again say that one would have to IGNORE the rest of the word of God that CLEARLY and without a doubt teaches us that Jesus is God's SON and the Son of MAN. There are many verses of scriptures that clearly show Jesus himself calling Almighty God the Father HIS GOD which simply CANNOT be interpreted any other way.

But on the other hand EVERY verse that is used by those that teach the trinity and that Jesus is God can INDEED be interpreted in another way.

Whereas there are ALSO many multiple verses the CLEARLY and PLAINLY show that Jesus is the SON of God, the Son of MAN, the Christ or anointed one, that he could do nothing of himself, where he did not know the day or the hour, but God the Father knew, that he was the servant of God, a fellow servant with us, our brother, that he had a will of his own that was different from his Father, that he was tempted whereas God cannot be tempted, and many many more plainly stated facts that without a doubt prove that Jesus was not, is not, nor ever shall be Almighty God HIMSELF or even equal with HIS God and Father. And NOT ONE, NO NOT ONE single verse is there that clearly and plainly states that Jesus IS the ONE TRUE and ONLY ALMIGHTY God. For you see, while there can be many Gods. ther can only be ONE Almighty God.

Please read the quick list of reasons why Jesus IS GOD, but that Jesus is NOT THE ONE TRUE and ONLY ALMIGHTY God who ALONE is the FATHER entitled “37 THINGS TO PONDER ABOUT JESUS BEING GOD” Also, the other following studies wil help you help others to come out of the false doctrine of Oneness and the false doctrine of the Trinity. All these studies consider all the WHOLE word of God and not just a few vague isolated verses taken out of their context. I also have them in a list under one LINK. So if you are questioning the doctrine of the Trinity or the doctrine of Oneness then I implore you to read all the studies under the heading >>>A LIST OF STUDIES OF THE TRINITY<<<

Thanks for reading. May God bless you richly as you continue to seek the TRUTH of the WHOLE word of Almighty God. Below are some other verses that are used to try and support the doctrine of the trinity and the deity of Jesus. There may be other verses which you may be having trouble seeing any other way that what you were dogmatically taught, but I assure you that each and every verse used by those who teach the doctrine of the trinity does indeed have a different meaning that does NOT CONTRADICT any other part of God's word.
