Bb-8. Does Romans 5:18 teach Universalism?

For those of you who do not already know, Universalism teaches that every single person will eventually be saved. And one of the verses of Scripture that Universalist Christians use is Romans 5:18. Here is a quote from a Universalist website. The emphasis is mine. But first, let us read Romans 5:18 from the ESV translations which they quote.

Romans 5:18, ESV.

“Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men.”

And here is the Universalist interpretation of Romans 5:18 that I copied and pasted from one of their websites. Again, the emphasis is mine to draw your attention to how they interpret the phrase “LEADS to justification and life for all men”.

“It’s verse 18 that I’m mainly appealing to. For whom will Christ’s act of righteousness lead to acquittal and life? Answer: “all men.”...”

Notice how they “interpret” Romans 5:18 from the ESV, the English Standard Version translation of the Bible. They change the verb LEADS to WILL LEAD which changes the true intended meaning of this verse of Scripture from POTENTIALLY leading people to forgiveness of past sins to hopefully enduring unto the end to receive eternal life to and absolute guarantee that every person will without fail be saved.

But in truth, Romans 5:18 carries the meaning of the old saying, “You can lead a horse to water but you cannot make the horse DRINK the water”. So, in truth, Romans 5:18 actually means that we can lead people to hear the gospel of salvation but we cannot make them BELIEVE the good news of God laying all their sins upon Jesus so that they can receive His free GIFT of righteousness.

Can you not see that God chose the foolishness of PREACHING to save them who BELIEVE?

Please read 1 Corinthians 1:18-21.

“For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the POWER of God

19.  For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.

20.  Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this world? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?

21.  For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that BELIEVE.”

Faith comes by hearing but how will they hear without a PREACHER? But even when people do HEAR the gospel of salvation does not mean that ALL men will BELIEVE. So yes, the one act of Jesus dying on the cross LEADS to justification and life FOR all men to RECEIVE God’s free GIFT, but that does NOT mean that ALL men will ACCEPT God’s so great a salvation.

So no, Romans 5:18 does NOT prove that every single person will eventually be saved. Please read ALL of the studies under the heading >>>Bb-0. Will Everyone be Saved?<<<
